This guide’s aim is to clearly explain the LGC Alignment System and what it influences. It will also give examples to help you make better choices while playing.
What is the LGC Alignment System?
The LGC Alignment works like a moral compass, and it’s influenced by what Van does in the main story and 4SPGs. It’s called LGC because it’s made up of three parts: Law, Gray, and Chaos. While it doesn’t matter much until Chapter 5, it can be really helpful for gameplay.
To make the Alignments stronger, you need points. You get these points by doing 4SPG requests and making specific choices in the story. When you finish a 4SPG, Van gets 1 point for the Alignments you see when you accept a sidequest.
The ‘Investigate a Friend Who Stole’ 4SPG grants 1 Law and 1 Gray point upon completion
Also, sometimes at the end of 4SPGs, Van gets to choose something. These choices give 5 points to one of the Alignments.
’Confess to the store and return the money’ (Law) or ‘Return the money without telling the store’ (Gray)?
Here’s the total points needed to level up each Alignment:
Now, for the big question: Can you max all three Alignments in one playthrough? According to ‘The Complete Guide (日本ファルコム公式 英雄伝説 黎の軌跡 ザ・コンプリートガイド)’ book, the answer is no, it’s not possible. However, there are various strategies to get the most out of this system, which will be explained in more detail later.
What does it affect?
- In-game achievements and rewards tied to leveling up each Alignment up to Lv5.
- Mare, which is Van’s exclusive Hollow Core, gets different upgrades when reaching Lv3 for each Alignment.
- Van’s Alignment affects the factions the Solutions Office can partner with during the events of Chapter 5.
- These factions can aid the Solutions Office before entering the final dungeon during the Final Chapter if their respective Alignment is at Lv4 or higher.
- One optional boss per Alignment will appear in the final dungeon if they are at Lv5. These bosses drop Jet Black Steel, a special alloy used to create the ultimate weapon for every party member.
The most important thing to think about regarding your choices is whether you want to focus on the story or the gameplay:
- If you want all the story-related stuff, try to get all Alignments to Lv3 by Chapter 5 (all Routes available) and Lv4 by the Final Chapter (before the final dungeon). But remember, this might make it tough or impossible to get any Alignment to Lv5 for the optional bosses.
- Alternatively, if you’re more into the gameplay benefits, like upgrading Mare early or getting extra Jet Black Steel, you can aim for Lv5 in Chaos and Gray while not giving too much attention to Law or vice versa.
Mare Upgrades
Once any Alignment reaches Lv3, Mare will sync up with Van’s will, unlocking new potential. While Mare’s S Boost -Multiple Works- gives Van a bit of everything, these new Cores help him have a more specific role in battles.
“Boost to enhance multiple combat parameters”
“Boost to turn your unbreakable will into power”
“Boost to increase mobility and storm the battlefield”
“Boost to turn your impulse of destruction into power”
The cool thing is that you can get all versions during the same playthrough, and these upgrades share their Lv and Exp with the default Mare. So, you don’t have to level them up separately.
Chapter 5 Route Split
When you reach Oración, the Solutions Office can team up with different factions during the main events of this Chapter. However, to work with each faction, you need to meet certain Alignment requirements:
- Bracer Guild: Requires Law Lv3
- Characters involved: Elaine (playable character during Phase 1), Fie (playable character during Phases 2 and 3), Zin (AI-controlled guest)
- Heiyue: Requires Gray Lv3
- Characters involved: Rixia (playable character), Cao (AI-controlled guest)
- Ouroboros: Requires Chaos Lv3
- Characters involved: Walter and Lucrezia (AI-controlled guests)
- Ikaruga: Requires the sum of Law and Chaos to be 5 or higher
- Characters involved: Shizuna (playable character), Kurogane (AI-controlled guest)
It’s important to note that if you don’t meet any LGC requirements, the Solutions Office will join forces with the Bracer Guild by default.
List of 4SPGs and Choices
Get ready for lots of tables! The next two sections have a bunch of them.
All 4SPGs and their choices (if there are any) have been gathered and organized using ‘The Complete Guide’ and my own savefiles to double-check the info. These lists include both the Japanese names of every sidequest and their translated name, which might change once the game is localized. The choices are only in English to save space, but they are ordered as they appear in the game: the first choice corresponds to the Y button, while the second one is the X button.
Finally, the total points earned by completing 4SPGs are included, while that part of the table is left empty for the points that depend on the choices. This way, you can use these images as a template for your own playthrough.

I made sure to keep things as vague as possible when it comes to the choices you get after defeating certain bosses to avoid spoilers.

Sample Templates
I understand that all these points and choices can be overwhelming, and the game doesn’t provide a way to keep track of your Alignment points. But don’t worry, I’ve created some templates that can help you make the most of the LGC System and achieve specific results during your playthrough.
Please note that this section is a work in progress since I’m currently playing through a fresh file while following one of these templates to check if my routing is correct or not. So far, it matches with the spreadsheet, but I’ll update the information below if anything changes.
Balance
Here’s a template called “Balance.” The idea is to level up all Alignments equally. This way, you can work with all factions during Chapter 5 and get the full cutscene before the final dungeon in the Final Chapter. However, none of the Alignments will reach Lv5.
Results:
- Mare upgrade order: Chaos > Law > Gray
- Law will reach Lv3 (61/60) by Chapter 4 (Basel, Oct 24th) and Lv4 (94/120) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Gray will reach Lv3 (52/50) by Interlude (Edith, Nov 9th) and Lv4 (75/100) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Chaos will reach Lv3 (33/30) by Chapter 4 (Edith, Oct 18th) and Lv4 (52/75) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
Lv5 Chaos & Gray, Lv2 Law and earliest Mare (Chaos)
By focusing on Chaos and Gray, you can maximize both Alignments in the same playthrough while leaving Law at a lower level.
This approach comes with several gameplay benefits, including getting two extra drops of Jet Black Steel and, most notably, obtaining Mare (Chaos) early in the game, around the end of Chapter 3. From a story perspective, you’ll be able to partner with all factions except Law during Chapter 5 and watch 2/3 of the cutscene before the final dungeon in the Final Chapter.
Results
- Mare upgrade order: Chaos > Gray. It’s impossible to obtain the Law upgrade.
- Law will be at Lv2 (37/60) by Chapter 5 (Edith, Nov 19th) and will remain at Lv2 (52/60) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Gray will reach Lv3 (51/50) by Chapter 3 (Tharbad, Oct 7th) and Lv5 (104/100) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Chaos will reach Lv3 (32/30) by Chapter 3 (Tharbad, Oct 6th) and Lv5 (77/75) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd). Alternatively, you can achieve Lv5 in Chapter 5 if you choose differently after defeating the Phase 3 Boss, though there may not be any significant benefit in doing so.
Lv5 Law, Lv3 Chaos & Gray and earliest Mare (Chaos)
In this template, you have the option to invest in Alignments other than Law to obtain all Mare upgrades and still reach Lv5 in Law. However, achieving Lv5 in Gray, as seen in the previous template, is not possible, even if you completely ignore Chaos, as it falls 11 points short. This approach allows you to ally with any faction during Chapter 5 and maximize Law Alignment.
Results
- Mare upgrade order: Chaos > Law > Gray
- Law reaches Lv3 (61/60) by Chapter 4 (Basel, Oct 24th) and Lv5 (120/120) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Gray reaches Lv3 (51/50) by Chapter 5 (Edith, Nov 19th) and stays at Lv3 (64/75) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Chaos reaches Lv3 (32/30) by Chapter 3 (Tharbad, Oct 6th) and remains at Lv3 (37/45) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
Lv5 Law, Lv4 Gray, Lv3 Chaos, and earliest Mare (Law)
This variant of the previous template focuses on Law and Gray, initially ignoring Chaos until Chapter 5. By doing so, you invest more in Law and Gray, allowing Law to reach Lv4 by Chapter 5, which enables you to partner with all factions except Chaos. After that, you can boost Chaos to Lv3 during the events of Chapter 5 to unlock the final Mare upgrade. Lastly, you can watch 2/3 of the cutscene before the final dungeon in the Final Chapter, as Gray reaches Lv4 by the endgame.
Results
- Mare upgrade order: Law > Gray > Chaos
- Law reaches Lv3 (61/60) by Chapter 3 (Tharbad, Oct 5th) and Lv5 (123/120) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Gray reaches Lv3 (52/50) by Interlude (Edith, Nov 9th) and Lv4 (78/100) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd).
- Chaos is at Lv1 (10/15) by Chapter 5 (Edith, Nov 19th) and reaches Lv3 (32/45) by the Final Chapter (Edith, Dec 3rd). Mare gets upgraded during Chapter 5 (Oración, Nov 21st).
