How to Unlock Fishing

Fishing becomes available in the game when you reach a special story quest on Crabb Island named “A Fishy Affair.” В этом квесте, your job is to catch a fish and give it to Gail Tootenboot, who is the blonde lady fishing at the dock. She needs this fish to join your crew.

Fishing Basics

After you hit the Play button, your hook starts from the X, and it moves according to the directions shown by the tiles in the bottom box.

Here are some important things to remember:

• The tiles you can choose depend on the bait you’re using. You can find a full list in the next section.
• You can use the same movement tile as many times as you want, but you have a limit on the total number of tiles you can use to reach your destination. The maximum is 20 in empty waters, but fish will only give you between 5 и 15 шансы.
• You must make sure your hook lands exactly where the fish is sitting to catch it, not just pass through the same square as the fish while following a tile’s path.

Inside the grid, you’ll see the ocean floor with different objects and, if you cast your line in the right spot, a fish somewhere in there. You can’t just cast your line anywhere you see water; you need to find where the fish is hiding.

When you’re out fishing, you can spot nearby fish when you see little round ripples on the water. These ripples don’t show up all the time, so keep your eyes peeled!

I know this can be a bit confusing when explained through text, so if you plan to do more than just follow my solutions for these fishing puzzles, my advice is to cast your line somewhere, select the hook as your bait, and experiment to see how everything behaves. It’s a great way to learn!

Fantastic Baits and Where to Find Them

There are ten different baits you can find on the Isles, and using the right one is essential for catching different fish. Each bait comes with a unique set of movement tiles that affect where and how far your hook can go.

Here are the baits and how to get them:

Baitless Hook: This is your default bait, and you have it as soon as you get your fishing pole. You can use it as much as you want.

Dragonflies: You can find dragonflies flying around the outskirts of town on the southwest side of Leeky Harbor.

Личинки: Look for grubs by digging in darker-colored grass, often near the swamps on Remy’s Lott. Just like with worms, dig until one pops out, then cancel the dig and catch them with your net.

CRABB ISLAND

On Crabb Island, you’ll find some prized fish that every angler should be on the lookout for. This island has calm and sparsely populated waters, making it an excellent place for fishing.

• The Spotted Catfish: These curious bottom-feeders prefer quiet and sheltered waters, so try targeting the bays around Crabb Island. The good news is they’re not too picky when it comes to bait, but they seem to have a liking for worms.
• Porcupinefish: The tropical porcupinefish in this area are known for puffing up as a defense mechanism, so be careful when handling them. You can spot them in the waters near the lighthouse, often alongside the prickly person guarding that section of the coast. Интересно, porcupine fish will bite at a bare hook, maybe due to their barbed nature.
• Greasy Lungfish: Although not the most appetizing catch, if you’re an angler looking to complete your collection of tropical fish, you’ll need to add this slippery eel-like creature to your list. While they aren’t commonly seen in Crabb Island’s waters, locals suggest you might spot them on Lonely Palm Island, particularly near the ruins. The lungfish isn’t picky about its meal, much like the adventurous soul who decides to try one.

REMY’S LOTT

Remy’s Lott may have a reputation for its quirky inhabitants, but it’s also a great place for fishing if you’re willing to explore.

• Рыба-ангел: The only angel you’ll find on Remy’s Lott is this sneaky little fish. It likes to hang out near rocky shores, so there are limited spots to find it. To catch an angelfish, using ticks as bait is recommended.

When it comes to fishing on the island, while it’s good fun, I’d advise against eating anything that comes out of the water unless you’re aiming to lose weight quickly.

• Sour Tang: For this fish, try this riddle: Stand by the doorway, venture out to the deep waters, and cast your line to the south. Ой, and don’t forget to bring some spiders with you. Hope you don’t mind a little extra company (хи-хи).
• Four-Eyed Butterflyfish: What’s better than two eyes, верно? This butterflyfish seems to be attracted to the smell of decaying matter. A bit gross, не так ли? But you can catch them on the beach where the smell of the local graveyard wafts through the air. And what do butterflies like best? Dragonflies, конечно!
• Monkeyfish: This cheeky fish enjoys hanging out in the bay west of the town. It’s not hard to find. I’d suggest taking a handful of grubs with you for this fishing adventure.

SHATTERED PEAK

Shattered Peak used to be a fantastic spot for fishing, but I’ve heard that something happened more recently, and the fish no longer gather there. The locals say that a terrible event scared them all away. Let’s hope it’s just a temporary situation.

• Smooth-Face Trunkfish: Before the fish disappeared, you could find them just hanging out in the water and gazing at that massive stone head thing. The one thing that could get their attention was grasshoppers.

Fish Locations and Puzzle Solutions

The Leeky Harbor Big Catch Tournament

The Big Catch Tournament in Leeky Harbor is an exciting event you can join once you’ve reached the second half of Act 2. To participate, head to the southeast of your dinghy, marked with a big hook icon on the map. Там, you’ll find the Fishmaster, a rather large individual outside the gated area, who will allow you to join the tournament. Keep in mind that once you begin the tournament, it must be completed without leaving Leeky Harbor and returning.

The Big Catch Tournament involves catching ten tokens scattered around the water in the same way you’d catch fish. Please note that, due to a bug, the new fishing rod doesn’t currently provide any bonuses, but it is intended to prevent bait loss on an unsuccessful cast and increase the available moves for solving fishing puzzles. To begin catching tokens, cast your line into the shallow waters alongside other fisherfolk. You can use any bait you like, and you have a maximum of 20 moves for each attempt. You can make as many attempts as needed as long as you don’t leave Leeky Harbor before catching all the tokens. I found that every single token can be caught using a baitless hook, so that’s the solution provided below. The order in which you collect the tokens doesn’t matter, and the order displayed in the image is just the sequence I happened to catch them in. Many tokens require similar starting moves, но, к сожалению, you’ll have to reset after picking up each token.

What to Do if you Miss the Tournament by Entering Act 3

If you’ve entered Act 3 without participating in the Big Catch Tournament, it’s important to note that the tournament is not required for 100% завершение достижения. Однако, if you’re determined to go back and experience it, there’s a way to temporarily regain access to it by editing your save file. This solution was provided by the head developer on the Bilkins’ Folly Discord, and it worked for me in an earlier build of the game. Final Notes and Conclusion

If you’ve followed all the solutions correctly, you should now have a total of 11 рыба, 10 Big Catch Tokens, a new trophy and fishing rod, and one very damp old boot. After catching your last fish, Percy mentions that he wants to present them all to Gail, so head back to your boat and talk to her in the lower deck. While this doesn’t appear as an official side quest in your notes, don’t forget to do this. I won’t spoil the exact details, but you’ll be prompted to make a decision regarding the relationship between you and Gail.
