Unite the surface dwellers with torpedoes to become one with the ocean! Submarines are similar to a destroyer with the exception of being able to submerge, homing torpedoes, and enhanced concealment. Their main weakness is receiving indirect AOE damage from depth charges that are dropped by ship or plane.
Different Submarine Variants
The German submarines have longer torpedo range with less torpedo tubes and slightly more concealment. The American version is the exact opposite and can get detected much easier because of engaging the enemy with its shorter range.
The German variant is suited more for a Sniper who have a good hand-eye coordination. The American version is a semi brawler that have equal torpedo tubes in both the bow and stern to attack well even when retreating. The submarine also has a single secondary cannon for defense when surface fighting but should be the last resort.
Regardless of nation, the enemy ship needs to be highlighted twice with ping for maximum torpedo damage.
Commander Skills
Most of the skills focus on making the torpedoes more lethal and crippling with the highlighted sectors.
- Liquidator
- Torpedo Crew Training
- Superintendent
- Torpedo Aiming Master
- Sonarman Expert
- Adrenalina
- Improved Battery Capacity
Unique commanders like Günther Lütjens and William F. Halsey Jr provide very unique skills, such as self-repair and faster reloading respectively.
Equipamento & Sinais
Camouflage is optional as the benefits are minimal unless dispersion is needed for close combat.
The most useful equipment is the faster torpedo speed with the Torpedo Tube Modification 1.
The core signals are the higher chance to cause flooding and faster ship speed to sail away from depth charges or danger.
When to Submerge
Submarines operate most of their time on the surface level to reposition itself at maximum speed. The initial phase is to actively hunt ships while being cautious enough to not reveal exact location. To avoid being detected, preventive measures to submerge ahead of time is needed when a threat is coming too close.
- Distant Surface Ships – Submersion Level 1
- CV Planes – Submersion Level 2
- Active Sonar – Submersion Level 2-3
Evasive Maneuver
The best solution for depth charges are to sail away from the bombarded area. The fastest sailing speed is when the submarine is on the surface and can avoid most of the damage.
Anti-Submarine planes are much easier to evade. Such option is not available when ships like destroyers are manually dropping.
Delayed Ping Attack
Homing torpedoes require at least one highlighted sector for them to properly connect with the target. If the enemy clears the sonar pings too soon, the pathway of the torpedoes are disrupted and miss entirely.
A solution is to delay the sonar ping until the homing torpedoes have reached at least halfway to the target. Torpedoes have a higher chance to hit when closer to the target despite clearing the the ping.
The Torpedo Sandwich
The homing torpedoes does not need to be fired directly at the enemy ship when at least one sector is highlighted. The lock-on mechanism works if the degree difference between the launched torpedo and the pinged target is less than ~75 degrees.
The submarine can shoot twice at the enemy ship by making a full turn to fire all homing torpedoes from both the bow and stern. The target still needs to be at least 90% of max torpedo range in the event that the enemy retreats.
Close Quarter Combat
The submarine needs to be retreating at full speed forward when being actively pursued. A fast surface ship like a destroyer or cruiser will prevent the ship from fully surfacing. Only the stern homing torpedoes can be used with the sonar ping.
Sub vs Sub
Enemy submarines are typically fought at or around the same depth. Sonar pings are needed for those who are actively evading by changing depth.
Manual aiming without any pings are needed when the enemy is less than 2 km away. Homing torpedoes are still preferred because of being significantly faster than the standard ones. Highlighted sectors can disrupt the trajectory when fired at close range and is not recommended.
Bon Voyage
The submarine is a stealthy and cautious ship hunter who does not take unnecessary risks. The limited battery power needs to be conserved until needed for emergencies or evasive maneuvers. The better decision in difficult situations is to choose life when possible to fight another day.
