Here is a comparison of all weapon types in valhiem to find what is the actual best weapon and giving advice on armour choice.

>The round shield is incredibly useful and can block large amounts of damage while being able to parry, so it pretty simply increases the one handed weapons blocking ability at the cost of 5% of your movement speed.
>The tower shield functions like a wall between you and your enemies, you cant parry with it so it protects you well but at a cost. Since parrying bosses is less effective than parrying normal enemies in a singleplayer run a tower shield is only really useful in bossfights however if there are other vikings playing with you the usefulness of someone with a tower shield cant be overstated.
>The buckler is designed around parrying making it difficult to use but is outshone by the round shield because parrying with a round shield already normally negates all damage. unless you are fighting heavy hitters like trolls or abominations the buckler is mostly a weaker shield. If you are going into an extremely dangerous biome such as the plains in swamp gear a buckler is very useful because it will be the only shield with enough block armour to do anything when you parry.

>Swords are relatively basic but are powerful, they deal slash damage which means there are almost no enemies resistant to the sword but not many enemies weak to it either.
>Maces are practically identical to swords except they deal blunt damage which a lot of enemies are weak to and has more knockback than the sword
>Axes deal slightly more damage than the sword and mace but attack slightly slower. Using an axe as a weapon is more for the sake of having more inventory space for other things and besides, what is a viking without their axe?
>Knives are more tools everybody should have, they are great for the odd enemy you come across and for sneaking up on stronger enemies but not something i would recommend relying on in a large fight. That’s not saying you cant though because i know people who use their knife as their primary melee weapon and are not pushovers to say the least. The mistlands dual wielding knives are more a combat weapon though as you can become a terrifying human blender.
>Bows are also tools more than weapons to most players and are a must once you enter the mountains, it is expensive but possible to mainly use bows and in a group of people an archer is very useful.
>Crossbows are similar to bows but function differently, there is not much to say about them
>Spears have the lowest range of all weapons and a wonky hitbox, but they can be thrown which is more a weak gimmick since it is slow, inaccurate and half the time you will never see your spear again after you throw it. A spear will get you through the meadows and black forest but after that are useless.
>Two handed clubs have low dps and no secondary attack but deal area damage making them useful in the swamps but nowhere else.
>Two handed axes have nothing going for them, they are slow and you cant use a shield with them so i would not recommend them
>Two handed swords (only in the 6th biome) are fun and satisfying to use and are quite powerful at the cost of a lack of versatility
>Polearms are ignored but are amazing, they have a relatively high dps and long range, not to mention their secondary attack is a spin that is great for crowd control and staggers almost anything. Polearms have a high block armour and parry bonus making the problem of being unable to use a shield irrelevant. overall polearms take skill to use well and are a force to be reckoned with in capable hands.

In a biome you normally have two choices of armour but you will often find that the is more choices than you think, for example one of my friends who mains a bow sticks with root armour until the mistlands because it has an archery skill increase, a resistance to pierce and poison damage
and still can take a hit in the plains. I on the other hand get fenris armour immediately and use that for the rest of the game since it allows you to avoid getting hit at all, looks cool and provides a resistance to fire and cold, wearing fenris armour i can still take a large fuling village no problem.
No you cant run the entire game in troll armour and not be a liability to everybody else but i am happy to be proven wrong on this point.
Armour in Valhiem isn’t as important a you think since if you can block dodge and run away there is
little need for the heavy -10% movement speed armour. (if you are playing singleplayer this is not the case)
Wniosek
If you have gotten through my rant and are still reading this you have my thanks, have a good day
