If you’re playing Onigiri on Linux and want to increase the in-game screen resolution, this guide is exclusively made for you. Read on as we guide you through the step-by-step process on how to increase the Onigiri resolution.
Pre-Requisites
- Turn on Steam Play (Proton).
- Download the newest Proton-GE with Protonup.
- Switch the Proton version for each game to use the latest Proton-GE.
AMD FSR
Resolution and Quality
AMD’s FSR, or FidelityFX Super Resolution, does its magic by making the game run at a lower resolution first. This helps the game perform better. After that, clever AI steps in to make the image look all nice and sharp at the resolution you actually want. AMD suggests specific resolutions based on your screen size. Take a look at this useful image.
Let’s say your screen is 1920×1080, and you fancy the Quality preset. For that, set your in-game resolution to 1280 x 720. Now, if you’re reaching for the stars with the Ultra Quality preset on that same 1920 x 1080 screen, your in-game resolution should be 1477 x 831. Got a fancy 3440×1440 screen like mine? Well, just go for the game’s highest resolution, which is 1920×1080.
Want to spice things up? You can toss in a little extra with WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH. It’s like adding extra seasoning for the sharpness of FSR. You get to pick a number from 0 to 5, where 0 is super sharp, and 5 is a bit more chill. If you don’t pick a number, it defaults to 2.
Remember, more sharpening makes the image look better but might make your game a tad slower. So, choose wisely!
Setup Steam Launch Options
To tweak your game with FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), follow these steps. Give your mouse a right-click on the chosen game, then choose “Properties.” Move over to the General Tab, and type this into the Launch Options:
WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command%
If you want to be the captain of sharpening, you can spice it up even more. Just add this before %command%:
WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=1 %command%
This lets you control the strength of FSR’s sharpening effect. Easy peasy!
Setup your In-game Resolution
Alright, now that your game is up and running, head over to the Options menu. Look for the Video Options section and do the following:
- Switch the display setting to Fullscreen (none of that Bordered or Borderless Window stuff!)
- Adjust the resolution to match the quality preset you’ve chosen (for instance, if you’re rocking Ultra-Quality on a 1920 x 1080 monitor, set it to 1477 x 831).
- If the game demands it, give it a little restart dance!
And there you have it! Say goodbye to that garbage resolution and welcome the sweet freedom! Yey!
