Hello and welcome to my guide on how to get started in Rimworld. Rimworld is a colony building and management game with endless possibilities and replayability. But all that potential is wasted if you don’T weet zelfs waar te beginnen, the tutorial does a decent job but for those who need some extra help, or perhaps those who just need some help getting started on the first buildings this guide is for you!
Selecting your game mode
This guide will go off the assumption you’ve completed the tutorial and there have a basic grasp of how to click on things and how to navigate the main menu.
So to begin click on the new colony, you will then be presented with a choice of several scenarios, I recommend for your first time to be the “Crashlanded” scenario, as is it described as the “classic Rimworld experience” and in my opinion the most accessible to beginners.
Please note some options I have here might not be present for you, once you are more familiar with Rimworld and the various mods you’ll be able to customize your starting scenario
A.I. Storyteller
Na jou’ve chosen your game mode, you will then be asked to choose an A.I. storyteller and your preferred difficulty, selecting each storyteller gives you a general idea of what they do and what they will add to your colony’s story as that’s what Rimworld is all about. I recommend Cassandra Classic as your first one for a good mix of action and adventure however if you’re really unsure you can never go wrong with Phoebe Chillax, Randy on the other hand….we don’t talk about him. Do with that ambiguous statement as you will. It should be noted that if you decide NOT to tick “commitment mode” you can change this at any time via the pause menu. Als u kiest “reload at any time you can safely save scum your way through the game to your heart’s content.
World Creation
Na jou’ve made your choices you will be greeted with the world creation screen, here you’ll finds various options to further tailer the world to your liking, Dus ik’d recommend you give this screen some extra consideration.
Things like rainfall, temperatuur, and population play a big part in how the world is formed, globe coverage dictates the Pangaea-like land mass the game gives you. In my experience 30% is more than enough, Echter, the beauty of Rimworld is that it is up to you, so choose what you like (and what you think your PC can handle) the factions section simply adds or removes the different factions present in the game world, I recommend to leave it at its default settings for your first play through to really get the best of everything the game has to offer. The world is randomly generated based on what you type in as a seed so feel free to experiment with that function by putting in something silly and hitting generate to see what you get.
If you chose to use the seed displayed in the picture above your world may come out similar to the one I have here.
From here you can choose your landing site, this is perhaps the most important decision you can make before you actually start playing so take great care and choose the best possible spot when zooming in you can select a tile to see what its environment is like as well as any other relevant information in the bottom left of the screen.
Choosing your Colonists
Zodra jij’ve painstakingly chosen the perfect spot for your new home the create characters screen will pop up, this will be the last menu screen but likely the one you’ll append the longest at, at least it usually is for me.
This is where you choose your 3 starting colonists. Nu, jij kunt’t bring everyone with you, alleen 3. Dus, some tough choices have to be made here. Those who are in the left behind section aren’t necessarily gone forever but the likelihood of seeing them again is very slim. As for choosing that is honestly rather subjective, do you want to have the best fighters you can? Do you want to hunt for food or grow it? Do you want to trade and make allies with the different factions? Or are you like me and have no idea at all what would be useful this first time around? My recommendation is to go for overall team skills with passions in shooting, construction, medicine, planten, and intellectual. Naar mijn mening, a passion for a skillset with a lower level is more valuable then a skillset with a high level but no passion. The flames next to a skillset show the passion level of a pawn. Without a flame, they gain exp at a rate of 35% of the base rate but with a single flame they gain exp at 100% of the base rate, and with a double flame, they gain exp at 150% of the base rate. It is also a smart move to choose pawns who have few or no injuries, no incompatibilities and are relatively young biologically speaking
Landing
Zodra jij’ve chosen your crew it’s time to make landfall.
Behold, the starting screen which tells you your scenario. Once you hit okay your game begins in earnest, and the pressure is on as your colonists have no shelter and little food. The absolute first thing you should do is stop time by pressing the space bar.
Your first buildings and setting up work orders
Now the first thing I always do is pause the game with the spacebar to prepare a place to store the goods we crashed with. To do so navigate to the architect panel, then zone, then stockpile zone (Really difficult huh). From there you simply drag out a square roughly 11 door 11, with the architect menu still open select structure, and build wooden walls around your newly placed stockpile zone with doors on either side.
Now once you’ve done that and you unpause you might notice your colonists are just kind of milling about, Dat’s because the items you crashed with are forbidden and therefore they must be allowed to interact with them. To do so open the architect panel and then open the orders menu after that simply click and drag over any items with a little red X on them.
Now we’re moving, if the game is moving a bit slow for you the 1 2 en 3 keys will speed up time. Note that during any kind of combat, the game will slow down to 1x speed so you don’t have to worry about trying to move at lightning speed during a firefight.
If you notice your colonists aren’t doing what you want them to it may be that they aren’t assigned to that task, to change this navigate to the work tab at the bottom of the screen from here you can select who does what.
I recommend diving right in and set expectations early for your people by turning on manual priorities so you can have colonists do things the way you specifically want them done, the higher the number the larger the priority
The best work setup for this particular group would probably look something like this:
First tasks
Once that is finished you could unpause and watch your little people go. Any trees inside the stockpile will be cut down automatically because of the walls you build around the stockpile made it into a room and pawn build roofs automatically unless told not to.
The next step is building shelter for your pawns as at this point they will likely come to the first night and sleeping on the ground isn’t exactly ideal so pause again and start to plan a shelter, usually to start with I make a barracks. Als jij’re observant you’ll have noticed the chop trees icon in the orders menu under architect, be sure to chop down any trees near by if you require the wood.
My barracks here is 6×8 met 3 beds, a torch and wooden floors, the next thing youll want to do is designate a growing zone so you can start growing your own food, like I have over here.
Good work Borto
The third thing you’ll want to make a dining room for your colonists to sit down and socialize and eat together.
The next step is up to you
Zodra jij’ve done that you’ve got a solid start with the basics of a colony in the making, part of the fun of Rimworld is learning and experimenting with what does and doesn’t work, and seeing the fate of your colony and its inhabitants fates unfold before you, will they go on to meet the love of their lives? Will they meet a long lost relative somehow also stranded on this planet? Will they starve to death before they ever get to see what this planet truly has in store? Will they be killed and eaten by a roving pack of man hunting rabbits?
Only time will tell.
