Don’t Starve is a game about exploring, But I feel as if some guides are very specific about how to survive immediately, leaving less for the new player to explore. This guide will be about simple stuff the player can do and then send the player off on their way.

Now off to our stats:
- Honger: Like the name of the game, you have hunger. Most food will be giving you hunger. When it reaches 0 you start losing health quickly.
- Geestelijke gezondheid: Sanity is a special stat that can cause you to go insane, the lower you get the more shadow creatures you see, and if you reach too low, well you have to deal with them coming after you. You can get sanity by picking flowers or eating some foods, but some foods can also hurt your sanity like uncooked meat.
- Gezondheid: Simple as when your HP reaches 0 you die. You can heal yourself by eating some foods or using some items, though some foods can also hurt you. You can wear armor to take less damage from monsters.
- Wetness: When it’s raining or you are doing something with water you’ll gain wetness, having too much wetness will cause you to start going insane, make your items wet, or make some tools slip out of your hand.
- Temperature: In-Game you have a temperature, when it reaches too low you start to freeze, if it reaches too high you start to overheat.
Er zijn 4 seasons, Autumn, Winter, Lente, Summer.
You always start in Autumn, Autumn is usually the safest season. Winter comes after, Winter makes everything chilly and you will need something to warm you up, and a torch isn’t enough. Spring comes next and is kind of safe like Autumn, but there is lots of rain and everything will be wet. Summer comes last, and the opposite of winter it’ll make everything hot, some things can catch fire so you need things to help you cool down. Uiteindelijk, it comes right back to Autumn. But watch out, at some point in every season, a boss will spawn and it’ll come after you. It’ll never happen in your first autumn but you should watch out for every autumn after that.
Every in-game day is 8 notulen, and the day consists of Day, Avond, and Night.
- Day is usually the safest part to be in, some enemies don’t come out and some helpful mobs are awake such as pigs. Otherwise it is relatively normal.
- At Evening you will slowly lose sanity, some other enemies start appearing such as spiders, and pigs hide away.
- At night you will need a light, as something lurks in the dark… You’ll need a torch during this time, this is usually the most dangerous time due to limited sight and you still having sanity loss.
Around every 11/21 days a full moon can appear, a full moon is a special night where special things can happen. It is completely lit so you don’t need a light this night, some mobs become different, and a character can change because of the full moon.
The closer it is to winter, the more evening and night there is, while the closer it is to summer the more day there is.
Character Basics
These will be small tips on each character and what some of them can do.
Wilson:
He grows a beard that allows him to take longer to freeze in winter, he can also shave it for beard hairs.
Willow:
She has a lighter that lasts longer and can cook, she also gains sanity from fire and has bernie to protect her when she’s insane. She does take more damage from the cold though.
Wolfgang:
He can lift weights to make himself mightier, being mighty allows him to deal more damage and chop/mine faster, though if he doesn’t lift enough he becomes wimpy which makes him attack worse and work worse. He loses muscle faster the hungrier he is and he goes insane a lot faster, other players can make him lose sanity slower though.
Wendy:
She doesn’t hit as hard and she takes longer to go insane, but she has abigail which can attack mobs for her, abigail upgrades overday and she deals more damage the closer to night it is. Abigail does AoE damage which hits enemies around her. You can craft special potions to upgrade abigail in specific ways.
WX-78:
He takes damage from being wet/rain, the more wet he is the more damage he takes. He can also eat gears to heal all his stats and upon death he drops between 1/3-1/2 gears he ate. He has a charge bar that he can plug circuits to, he can make circuits but he must scan mobs to learn how to make specific circuits. To gain charge he either has to wait or get hit by electricity like thunder, or charge at Winona’s generators. He also ignores the spoilage of food.
Wickerbottom:
She has better overall sanity, she is smarter which allows her to learn science machine recipes from the start. She can also make books which use sanity but do special effects, though foods that start spoiling or becoming stale hurt alot more and she cannot sleep.
Woodie:
He has a special axe that allows him to chop trees alot more quickly, and it speaks too, though it does a bit less damage. He also has higher chance of spawning treeguards. He also has a curse deep down, eating too much monster meat or eating idols he made can transform into his cursed forms. Werebeaver is better at harvesting, Weremoose is better at fighting, and Weregoose is better at exploring/running.
Wes:
Wes is one of the hardest characters in the game, he deals less damage, has very low stats, cannot speak at all, and freezes/overheats faster and gets struck by lightning more often. He can make balloons which can help but it is advised to not play as him when you don’t know what you’re doing.
Maxwell:
Maxwell has the worst health in the game, yet he starts with a constant sanity regen that is stronger than evening. He can also use his codex umbra by placing it on the ground to summon shadows that do work for him.
Wigfrid:
She has low stats except for her health, she has a 25% damage reduction and 25% extra damage multiplier, she can also make special spears and helmets that are better than normal ones. When fighting she gains inspiration which requires special songs she can make. But she is only able to eat meat.
Webber:
He has better health and hunger but worse sanity, he is also a spider which means spiders can be befriended by him and are neutral, though he is a spider which makes pigs, bunnymen, and catcoons (and maybe more) attack him. He also can eat meat without losing any sanity or health.
Winona:
She has special tape which can repair dress items, which usually give insulation or give sanity, such as tophats. She also gets 1 free hit from the darkness monster. Winona speed crafts but costs 5 hunger when doing so, if she speed crafts in under a specific time frame she won’t lose more hunger. When below 50 hunger she will craft slower than normal. She can also make generators to power up other tools she has like spotlights and catapults.
Warly:
Warly has an extremely good stomach of 250 but he starves faster. He can only eat crockpot food, and he has a food memory of 2 dagen, if he eats the same food in under 2 days he will gain less benefits from said food. But he comes with a special crockpot which cooks 20% faster and can make special foods only warly can make, he also can make spices and apply them to meals to make them do special effects.
Wortox:
Wortox has special souls which are gained from killing mobs, he can only carry 20 souls and can eat them for food but loss of sanity, Souls can also be used to teleport. Normal food only gives half of the hunger, geestelijke gezondheid, and health. Wortox is also a monster but spiders aren’t friendly to him. Wortox loses less sanity too.
Wormwood:
Wormwood cannot be healed by any food, but can be healed by fertilizers like poop. Wormwood loses sanity from chopping trees or hurting nature, but gains sanity from replanting pinecones or replanting nature. He can also place seeds into the ground without needing a farm. He also has special crafting and can make living logs at the cost of his health.
Wurt:
Wurt can’t eat meat, but she gains extra hunger from eating veggies. Wurt also regens sanity when holding fish. Wurt starts with a better stomach but slightly worse sanity. Wurt is a merm which means pigs hate her but bunnymen and catcoons aren’t evil. Wurt can befriend all merms using veggies too. Wurt can also make masks which allow other players to befriend merms. She can also make a royal tapestry which allows her to make the merm king which makes all merms (including herself) better.
Wanda:
She cannot be healed by food as her health was replaced by age. When wanda takes damage she ages instead, she also ages overtime. She can use her clocks to set back her age or to reverse someone’s death. Her strength gets worse when she’s really old, but she deals more damage with nightmare stuff.
What to do?
Wanneer je binnenkomt, the world is vast and there’s lots to explore, but sometimes said exploration can lead to death. Here’s some things you should try and do before you explore.
Pick up lots of twigs, grass and flint, you might need it!
Try making an axe and pickaxe, one for chopping and one for mining. You’ll need twigs and flint for either, once that is done you can try exploring.
When exploring you might find some boulders with gold veins in them, you will want to mine that for a science machine and you will get access to some more crafting options, the sooner the science machine, the better.
By now you should prepare for darkness.
When in complete darkness you will be unable to see and you will start losing sanity fast, and you may figure out real soon there’s a monster in the dark that’s going to attack you, so you’ll want some light like a torch.
After that you can look around for some food sources, by now your character may be hungry. Berry bushes give berries which give about 9 hunger, and you may find some carrots in the ground which give 12 hunger. Cooking food usually gives more benefits like carrots give 3 gezondheid, or berries give 12.5 hunger instead. You can cook at campfires or fireplaces.
By now you should try finding out new ways to get food sources, like attacking some spiders or learning how to trap some rabbits. Traps can be made using a twig and some grass, you can bait it with food to lead a rabbit into it.
Some Things to Find
When exploring you should find some specific stuff, whether it is helpful or not it’ll still be good to experiment with.
Find a Desert! It wields cactus and lots of rocky boulders, it can also have some special places like an oasis or magma pools, you should also pay attention to clues with the deserts, as there are two of them.
Pig King, he’s a giant fat king that sits in one spot, he should be easy to find, you can give him some stuff which he will give you gold in return.
Swamps, while extremely deadly they could have some cool stuff to get, such as reeds or some mosquito pieces.
Open a sinkhole and enter it! You can get a peak at the caves, another completely different level to look at in the world, don’t forget to bring some light!
Kerkhof, you can find gold around the area. They can also be interacted with if you have the right tools. Watch out for ghosts if you mess with their graves!
Eyebone, somewhere in the world a small eyebone can spawn, have fun searching!
Mosaic Biome, a small biome with very different grounds all connected, it usually has meteors so watch out for your head!
