This guide helps you achieve the Neutral ending in Undertale, which is a crucial path in the game.
In Undertale, the Neutral ending happens if you haven’t followed the Genocide Route (where you kill everyone) 또는 True Pacifist route (where you befriend everyone). It also occurs if, on your initial playthrough, you didn’t harm anyone, granting you access to the True Pacifist Route.
The Neutral ending has various versions, all involving a phone call from Sans. He informs you about the fate of the Underground, but the content of the call depends on the actions you took during the game. The final boss in this route is Flowey. After battling Flowey and then facing ASGORE once more, Flowey intervenes and defeats ASGORE, skipping his fight.
Toriel Ending Tree
Main Requirement: Spare Toriel.
Toriel is back on her throne, taking charge of the Underground. She’s implemented a policy of friendliness towards any humans who end up in their world. This ending leads to three possible outcomes: 그만큼 “Family Ending,” 그만큼 “Betrayed Undyne Ending,” 또는 “Exiled Queen Ending.”
Flawed Pacifist
요구사항: Befriend Papyrus, Undyne and don’t kill any monsters.
Cutscene:
The call switches to Papyrus, proudly declaring himself the “CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD.” 하지만, it’s revealed that this title is more symbolic, as the Royal Guard has been disbanded. Papyrus’s primary duty is now taking care of the garden at the New Home castle. Undyne joins the conversation, sharing that she has taken on a new role as Alphys’s lab assistant. She expresses sadness about Asgore’s loss but reassures the protagonist that it wasn’t their fault; they were merely doing what was necessary. The subsequent events in this ending depend on whether the protagonist has dated Alphys.
- If you haven’t dated Alphys: Alphys becomes even more withdrawn. Undyne emphasizes the sacrifices made by her and other monsters to help you return to the human world. She encourages you to cherish life on the Surface and make that sacrifice meaningful.
- If you have dated Alphys: Undyne brings Alphys into the call. Alphys mentions her quest to find a new way to free the Underground’s inhabitants, working diligently under Toriel’s stricter supervision. The call concludes with Sans noting the low battery on the phone, and everyone bids farewell.
Betrayed Undyne
요구사항: After befriending Papyrus and Undyne, kill Mettaton or 1-9 non-boss monsters.
The initial part of the call unfolds similarly to the Family Ending. Sans then passes the phone to Papyrus, who takes charge for the rest of the conversation. Despite Papyrus mentioning Undyne’s challenging situation after losing her job and home, he assures that both he and Sans are looking after her at their house. The remainder of the call diverges into three paths based on your actions.
- If you haven’t befriended Undyne but spared Mettaton: Undyne places blame on you for Asgore’s death. Papyrus discloses her plan to cross the barrier and confront you. He encourages you to stay in touch to facilitate their plans.
- If you killed Mettaton: Undyne is devastated, not only by Asgore’s absence but also by Alphys’s mysterious disappearance. Papyrus, unaware of what happened to Asgore and Alphys, implores you to “bring Undyne’s friends back” since she is struggling.
- If you have befriended Undyne but killed monsters afterward: Undyne despises herself for forming a friendship with you, given your subsequent acts of murder. Papyrus advises you to “PROBABLY NEVER COME BACK HERE” because Undyne would confront and potentially harm you, even the queen wouldn’t be able to stop her. The call concludes with Papyrus bidding goodbye, potentially forever in the third scenario.
Exiled Queen
요구사항: Either kill Papyrus, kill Undyne or kill ten or more monsters.
- If Undyne is alive: Undyne becomes furious over Asgore’s fate (and Alphys’s if Mettaton was killed), leading a rebellion that results in Toriel’s banishment back to the Ruins. Undyne takes on the role of empress, asserting control over the Underground.
- If Undyne is dead: Toriel peacefully steps down upon learning about the rebellion, returning to the Ruins. This results in the Underground descending into a state of uneasy and hopeless anarchy.
- If Papyrus is alive: Papyrus joins Toriel in the Ruins, engaging in games with her. He expresses love for standing in for the Queen and practices to become a “great mom” for the time when they reunite with the protagonist. Sans concludes the call, expressing hope that “things are better” wherever the protagonist is.
- If Papyrus is dead: Sans refers to Toriel as a good roommate, mentioning her desire to see the protagonist again. Sans avoids telling Toriel about the protagonist’s role in Papyrus’s death, as she protected them. The call concludes with Sans bluntly stating, “never come back here. you are not welcome.”
Undyne Ending
요구사항: Kill Toriel and spare Undyne.
- If Papyrus is dead: Undyne takes control of the Underground, implementing a policy to annihilate all entering humans. She prepares for war against humanity, militarizing the Underground and personally planning your destruction. Sans hints at Toriel’s demise, suggesting your responsibility, and cautions you to be wary as “things are lookin’ real bad for you.”
- If Papyrus is alive: Sans briefly mentions Toriel not feeling well, but Papyrus interrupts, revealing that Undyne has assigned him “The Most Important Royal Position.” Papyrus encourages you to visit, despite acknowledging the risk that Undyne might try to kill you.
Mettaton Ending
요구사항: Kill Toriel, Undyne and spare Mettaton.
Mettaton assumes control of the Underground following Undyne’s disappearance, creating a dystopian society where he uses his television show to brainwash the entire population. Sans discloses that he became Mettaton’s agent and then hands the phone over to Mettaton.
- If Papyrus is dead: Mettaton enforces a policy for humans, offering free membership to his fan club for any human who arrives. He urges you to always think of him and concludes the phone call.
- If Papyrus is alive: Papyrus joins the call, revealing that he has become Mettaton’s second agent. He suggests that things have improved since your departure (excluding the fact that everything is unpleasant, and those who don’t worship Mettaton go “missing”). Papyrus expresses missing Undyne and asks you to convey a “hi” if you happen to see her.
Papyrus Ending
요구사항: Kill Toriel, Undyne, Mettaton and spare Papyrus.
Papyrus assumes the role of ruler in the Underground, even though Sans handles most of the responsibilities. Sans informs Papyrus that Asgore, Alphys, Mettaton, and Undyne are all on “vacation.” After Sans departs, Papyrus shares his concerns about his newfound responsibility as ruler, especially when people “WANT TO GIVE UP.” He expresses his longing for his friends and assures you of his determination to “MAKE EVERYONE GIVE UP GIVING UP.” Papyrus hopes to eventually leave the Underground and spend time hanging out with you again.
개 결말
요구사항: Kill Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton and spare every non-boss monster.
A tiny, white dog takes on the role of president in the Underground, occupying the throne while doing absolutely nothing. 놀랍게도, this turns out to be the best scenario for everyone. Strangely, Sans avoids mentioning your act of killing Papyrus in this phone call and expresses gratitude for the favorable outcomes.
Leaderless Ending
요구사항: Kill Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton and at least one non-boss monster or kill 20 or more non-boss monsters.
With every character who could be considered a leader gone, the Underground finds itself without direction, becoming less crowded. The situation takes a dark turn, with a sense of hopelessness prevailing, and people feeling trapped in the dark. Sans clarifies that he’s not fit to be a ruler, preferring to take it easy (a humorous notion given the circumstances).
- If you have killed every boss and at least one non-boss monster: Sans bitterly bids you “see ya” and ends the call.
- If you have killed 20 or more non-boss monsters but spared the mentioned characters: Sans tells you to “go to hell” 대신에. This variant, where you kill every monster you encounter without actively seeking them out, is referred to as the Neutral-Genocide Route, but it doesn’t yield different dialogue from any other Leaderless ending.
Alphys Ending
요구사항: Follow the Genocide Route requirements but abort the route during the travel through Hotland.
In this route, Alphys is absent as the ending requires the killing of Undyne the Undying, preventing your encounter with Alphys in Hotland. After Sans locates your contact information, he passes the phone to Alphys, now the new ruler of the Underground. Alphys shares that, inspired by Undyne’s last words, she strengthened her resolve and evacuated the remaining monsters to safety, presumably the True Lab. The survivors hailed her as a hero and chose her as their new leader. Despite her confidence in governance, she remains uneasy around people. After mourning her friends’ loss, she concludes the call, expressing regret that she “really should have killed you when she had the chance.”
Impossible Ending
요구사항: Somehow meet none of the above requirements or hack the game.
Sans expresses confusion about the actions leading to this particular ending, explaining that the call serves as an error-handling message. He recommends reaching out to the developer to either fix the game or add another ending. Sans adds a humorous touch by suggesting, “chances are, 그렇지만… you’re just a dirty hacker, aren’t you? 응, get outta here.” He then promptly ends the call.
Special Sans Comments
After the short and not very exciting opening credits, Sans gives you a ring on your Cell Phone to leave a message. If specific conditions are fulfilled, he might start the call with a special remark. It’s important to note that Sans will share just one comment, and the following table shows them in the order of increasing importance.
- Did not meet any of the special requirements listed below or has killed Papyrus.
Sans simply leaves you a message.
- Has the Snowman Piece.

Sans immediately hands the phone to Alphys.
Flowey’s Parting Words
After the phone call, if you spared Flowey, he engages in a conversation with you based on your actions during the Neutral Route:
- If you killed no one: Flowey questions why you spared him and are being kind despite leaving the monsters in despair. He then advises you on achieving a better ending by befriending Papyrus, Undyne, and/or Alphys.
- If you befriended all key characters without exploring the True Lab: Flowey suggests seeing Alphys, as your date has just started.
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending again without kills: Flowey notes the unchanged ending, expressing that your choices seem inconsequential. He guides you on achieving a real happy ending by befriending Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys.
- If you reset your game, reach Asgore without kills, then kill Asgore at the end of the fight: Flowey scolds you for trolling yourself, emphasizing that befriending Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys is the key.
- If you killed some monsters: Flowey questions the necessity of killing and suggests attempting to reach the ending without killing, aiming for a potential “happy ending.”
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending again with kills: Flowey agrees that killing is fine but chastises you for only going halfway.
- If you reload your SAVE and trigger any neutral ending a second time: Flowey assumes you want to be friends, insulting you and stating that he cares only about one person, not truly caring about you.
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending a third time: Flowey jokes about starting the “Flowey Fan Club” and directs you to talk to Papyrus about it.
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending a fourth time: Flowey makes another joke about the Flowey Fan Club, warning you not to let Sans know, as he’s caused his fair share of resets.
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending a fifth time: Flowey suggests you’re just bored and refuses to engage in further conversation.
- If you reset your game and reach the neutral ending a sixth time and onwards: Flowey questions if you have anything better to do.
- If you abort the Genocide Route: Flowey expresses disappointment at the missed victory, speculating on your motivations and implying he’ll be “waiting for you.”
