It Lurks Below – Complete Survival Guide

Many first time players do not understand that this is in fact a tutorial, and end up in a loop of death and confusion. Follow this guide, and soon you’ll not only be through the tutorial – but headed into the below, where all the fun awaits!

This guide also assumes that you are playing

Don’t Waste Time.

너’ve just woken up on the surface of a world, surrounded by beautiful mountains, 나무, and the typical foliage of a green countryside. 확신하는, you had that weird dream about a dear friend sacrificing himself to a demon horde and putting all hope of victory on your shoulders – but how bad could things be?

Absolutely terrible, 정말.

Before we begin, I need to make it very clear that the longer you take in this tutorial, the more corrupted your world will become. For details, read on. 당신이 돈’t care, skip this part.

While exploring the surface, you will eventually come across a bloody, fleshy patch of ‘earth’ that probably has an eye or three staring you down. Monsters that spawn on the surface during this tutorial (more later on this) will spawn here. Do not make camp near the corruption unless you really know what you’지금 하고 있어. This is where the tutorial boss will eventually spawn. 가장 중요한 것은, the corruption will continue to grow throughout the tutorial until you kill Commander Vile. This is terrible, as corruption cannot be mined or changed in any way without an item you won’t have access to for many, many levels.

그래서, the goal here is to get through this tutorial section and kill Commander Vile as quickly and safely as you can. If you need to take moments to read this guide, 게임을 일시 중지하다. The good news is, once Commander Vile is dead, the corruption will only grow when the surface is invaded- which happens at random intervals. This is also the only time monsters will spawn on the surface. The faster you kill those invasions, the less time corruption has to spread. So think of the tutorial as one very long invasion.

You have two options at this point – click the little box in the upper right corner of your screen and read the quest, then proceed to follow its directions. The other option is to pick a direction and start walking – while picking up every stone, 당근, cabbage, 밀, berry, 막대, and mushroom you see. 우리’re going to opt for the latter.

The map is not particularly wide and it wraps around itself, so this should only take a couple of minutes. Holding down the right mouse button and skimming the surface with your cursor will help pick up everything quickly without all the clicking. Take note of where you’ve started so you’ll know when to stop – no need to make a second trip around just yet. Also keep an eye out for any clusters of iron ore showing in the dirt, as you’ll need that soon. Ignore rats and trees for now.

일단 당신은’ve done this and you’re back where you started, it is time to start completing the quests. Click that little exclamation point in the upper right or press ‘k’ to open the quest log.

Starting Off Right

The first quest will be ‘Starting off Right’ which requires you to collect the materials to craft your first weapon. Since you have all the materials you’필요할 거야, 누르다 ‘기음’ to open the crafting panel and do just that. You may have more than one option for a weapon, but it doesn’t matter which you choose. Weapons are located in the ‘Magical Objects’ section of the crafting menu. Once crafted, place it on your hotbar and select it by pressing the corresponding key (or use your mousewheel to flow to it). This will put it in your hands and make it usable. Open the quest menu again and hit ‘완벽한’ quest to move on.

Survival of the Fittest

The next quest is titled ‘Survival of the Fittest’. 본질적으로, you need to eat and sleep, and you need to be taught how to do that. 누르다 ‘z’ once to lay down for a nap, and press again (또는 움직입니다) to wake up. Do this quickly so as not to speed up time for long – the day will be short enough, I assure you. 다음, open your inventory with ‘나’ and start removing all of the stuff on your hotbar (except the weapon) into your inventory. Take note that your hunger and stamina are represented by the yellow and aqua orbs on your UI, 각기. The upper left of your screen will also list this information. If you run out of Stamina, 너’ll slow down to a crawl until you sleep or drink some coffee. If your hunger depletes entirely, you will begin taking rapid damage and most likely starve to death. This is bad. Pay attention to any flashing on the edge of your screen- the color that flashes will correspond to the problem. So red flashing is low health, yellow is low hunger, 등.

Tools For The Job

The next quest is titled ‘Tools for the job’ and simply requires that you take those materials you’ve already picked up and use them to craft ONE pickaxe and ONE axe. 두목’t double up here by accident as you may run out of materials. Place them on your hotbar, same as the weapon. The axe is used exclusively for bushes and trees – 하지만 돈’t cut any bushes down unless you desperately need sticks for some reason. The pick is used for every other block in the game- including any wood blocks you may place. Accept this and move on.

Getting Stronger

The next quest is titled ‘Getting Stronger’ and shows you how to place your stat points upon leveling up. 축하해요! Click the orange + symbol in the upper right and pick something to put points in. Or don’티 – as placing the point is not actually required to complete the quest. Vigor is always a smart play, but Attack Power, 활력, and Dexterity all have their merits. Intelligence lacks substantial value for this stage of the game, 그래서 나는’d avoid it. 아직, 그것’s your charater so pick one and lets get to the next quest! Note that you will only see Dex or Int on Melee and Ranged classes, 각기.

Instant Use Items

The next quest is titled ‘Instant Use Items’ and teaches you about exactly that. Upon completion of ‘Getting Stronger’ you were rewarded with a Learning Potion. If you followed my earlier advice about clearing your hotbar, it should’ve automatically been put on your free hotbar space. 그렇지 않은 경우… get it together, dude. Place it there yourself if need be, 당신은요’ll notice that its hotbar icon is lined with a colorful orange border. This indicates that upon pressing the corresponding button, the item will be ‘사용된’ as a consumable. 물약, 두루마리, and food items are all in the ‘Instant Use’ category and will share this border. When pressed, you will not swap away from whatever you are holding- you will simply consume or use the item. Be careful not to be wasteful and consume more than you need, or something you did not intend. Use the Learning Potion via the hotbar and move on to the next quest.

Ancient Items

The next quest it titled ‘Ancient Items’. Upon completion of the previous quest, you will receive your first Ancient Item – the item will depend on your class and I will not be going over them here. You might have noticed by now that your hotbar has twelve slots, seemingly divided into two separate sections. Both have six slots – the left is for weapons, 도구, consumables, 블록, 등. The right is exclusively for Ancient Items. Think of Ancient Items as skills, because that’s what they are. Each class has a total of five class-specific ancients. You get one during this quest, and then another at levels 5, 10, 15, 그리고 20. Mouse over the description of whichever ancient you received, and press the corresponding button to activate it and move on to the next quest.

Cooking Your Food

The next quest is titled ‘Cooking Your Food’. 당신이 상상할 수 있듯이, this involves creating a campfire and then using some of the food you’ve gathered to make a more refined dish. The campfire requires wood, 그래서 당신은’ll need to chop down a tree. 일단 당신은’ve done this and gathered the wood by walking near the dropped blocks, open the crafting menu and navigate to the ‘Apparatuses’ section to find the campfire. Craft it. It should stay on your cursor and you can place it immediately. If this does not happen and it went into your inventory, simply pick it up by left clicking then close your inventory with ‘나’. It will remain on your cursor and you can place it. If it managed to end up on your hot bar, pressing the respective button should select it and make it placable. 일단 배치되면, stand close by and open your crafting panel again. 다음으로 이동 ‘Food Recipes’ and make yourself a single bowl of cooked veggies. JUST ONE. Do not use all of your crops making food dishes right now, as you will need them for seeds very soon. 일단 당신은’ve done this, move on to the next quest. Your reward for completion is four additional bowls of cooked veggies.

About Blocks

The next quest is titled ‘About Blocks’. This simply introduces you to the block inventory, where all blocks picked up are neatly collected and organized into stacks up to 10,000. First though, 너’ll need to mine some blocks. Go dig up a couple of dirt blocks. Open your inventory, and notice that above your inventory slots and below the depiction of your character on this screen, you will see the word ‘목록’. On either side of this word are arrows – click the rightmost arrow to move to the block page. To grab blocks from this page, simply left click on the block you’나는 좋아한다. It will pick up 50 한 번에, if you have at least 50. Else it will only pick up what is available. You can continue left clicking to create a stack up to 500. Complete the quest and move on.

Sunset Interlude

If you have been following along promptly, it is probably near this point that the sun will begin to set. Monsters of various types will begin to spawn, and you will need to contend with them while completing the rest of these quests. They will spawn during the night, every night, until Commander Vile is dead. I highly recommend you avoid fights if you can, as the only way to heal will be to sleep or get lucky and find a potion from one of the monsters you kill. How you kill or avoid these enemies will depend largely on class, so your mileage and difficulty may vary. If you do fight and get potions or a blessing scroll, do your best to save them for Commander Vile unless you truly need them. 두목’걱정, 너’ll kill them all soon enough.

Your Home Base

The next quest is titled ‘Your Home Base’. This quest requires some mining of iron ore and cobblestone. Iron ore looks like little silver nodes in the dirt or cobblestone. Cobblestone is hard to miss. Open your map by pressing ‘꼬리표’ 당신은요’ll see sploches of grey (cobblestone) and small nodes of white (철). 너’필요할 거야 2 철광석, 20 cobblestone, 그리고 15 wood to complete this quest. Complete the quest and move on.

If you cannot find iron ore near the surface, 너’ll need to venture down into the dirt layer to find some. Torches and platforms are both incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend you make plenty of both. They are found in the ‘fixtures’ section of the crafting menu.

Keeping Yourself Fed & Survival Skills (CRITICAL IMPORTANCE)

The next quest is titled ‘Keeping Yourself Fed’ and is arguably the single most important section of the tutorial and this guide. You are provided with 8 Carrot Seeds and the blueprint for your first planter box. 당신은 필요합니다 8 dirt blocks to craft it, so grab some if you don’t have enough. 다음으로 이동하세요. ‘청사진’ section of the crafting menu, then craft and place the planter box. You will need to place it on a flat area, so create one if necessary by mining away dirt. Once down, place the seeds you were given on your hotbar, and select them. While you have the seeds selected, move close to the planter box and you will see one or more of the mounds highlight with a green border- this indicates the blocks you will plant the seeds into. Move your character such that only ONE plot is highlighted, 그리고 누르십시오 ‘이자형’ to plant one seed on that plot. DO NOT PLANT MORE THAN THIS. You may miss out on benefits from survival skills if you plant prematurely. Complete the quest and move on.

The next quest is titled ‘Surviving Skills’, and this is where you will be introduced to the Survival Skill Tree. There are a ton of skills covering a wide variety of topics and uses, but for now focus only on what is mentioned here. 누르다 ‘v’ to open your survival tree. There will be time to read through all of the skills later. The first skill you will put a point into is on page 2 at the top of the far right column. ‘Extra planter box’. If you have more skill points, move back to page 1 and place a point in the second column ‘Energetic Miner’, 그런 다음 ‘Rapid Miner’ beneath that. Three skill points have been spent so far. 다음 10 survival skill points you acquire should go toward completing both columns on the right side of page 3, pertaining to planting and harvesting. These first 13 skill points are critical to both ease of life and survival, so deviate at your own risk. Chickens can wait.

Now that you’ve placed your survival rank points, open your crafting menu and create the second planter box you unlocked. 당신이 돈’t have the 8 흙, grab some. 일단 배치되면, open your inventory. Mouse over the Cabbages you have and press ‘이자형’ to extract seeds from them until you have 10, or as close to 10 as you can get. Do the same for carrots, but do not forget that you were given 8 starter seeds so you should not need to extract more than twice. Doing this destroys the food item in question but provides you with a way to grow more. Each planter box has 10 음모, 총에 대해 20. Plant carrots on one and cabbage on the other until all plots are seeded.

The survival skills I recommend will allow you to occasionally harvest an extra crop, get free seeds on harvest, or get extra seeds when extracting. All of these things will help you have a steady supply of food. Each day at noon (12:00오후) all plants will undergo a growth cycle. This includes trees. Some plants take longer to fully grow than others. Carrots and Cabbages can grow in every season but Winter (when no plant may grow outside), and take only one day to fully grow. This means that each day you will harvest your Carrots and Cabbage after noon (you should get a notification telling you plants are ready for harvest), extract just enough seeds to replant 10 각, and cook what is left over.

At first it may seem like very little, but you will rapidly acquire large stores of food in this manner. Do not, under any circumstances, eat or cook your crops before planting enough to fill the planter boxes. You MUST plant between noon and midnight for a crop to grow the next day. If you plant crops or cut a tree after midnight and before noon, it will not grow when noon rolls around. If your crops are still planted when Winter arrives, seeds will pop out of the ground. If you do not pick berries before 10pm, they will fall off and be unobtainable until noon the next day. Stay vigilant.

Now that starvation is covered, it is time complete your quest and move on.

Commander Vile

The next quest is titled ‘Commander Vile’. It involves crafting an anvil, a new weapon, and your first armor. You will require a minimum of 12 iron ore and 1 wood to complete this quest; 하지만, I advise you to acquire 32 iron ore so that you may craft the complete iron armor set.

Once you have acquired the materials, craft all the iron bars you can. 그 다음에, 다음으로 이동 ‘Apparatuses’ and create the Anvil. Place it, and stand near it so you may craft the Improved Weapon and your new Iron Armor. The Improved Weapon is located in ‘Magical Objects’ – be sure you craft the one that requires iron bars and not the original weapon you crafted at the start of the game. 축하해요! There is only one thing left to do before life slows down and you can breathe easily for a while. You must kill Commander Vile, leader of the current demon invasion. If you open your map with ‘꼬리표’, you should see a small red circle on the corrupted area. This indicates the exact location of Commander Vile. During future invasions, if you lose track of any invasion monster, they can be found using this technique.

나는 추천한다, for maximum chances of survival and and complete domination, to scour the surface of all those enemies I told you to avoid earlier. More have surely spawned and you have no doubt been hounded throughout these last quests. Hope for a scroll of Blessing and some health potions, but be content with simple carnage. If you get a Blessing scroll, use it before you confront Commander Vile. 일단 당신은’ve scoured the surface of enemies, head over and show that Commander who is really in charge around here. 솔직히, 당신이’ve completed all these previous steps and are wearing a full set of armor, the fight should be a simple breeze. 그것’s just a tutorial ‘사장’ 결국. Commander Vile will no doubt drop a weapon for you, and it will most likely be an upgrade.

Round and Round

축하해요! The corruption is no longer spreading, and for the moment you are safe. It’s time to take it all in, explore the UI, look at the Survival Skills, and check out your ancient item(에스)…. but first you should probably take care of a few things.

The next quest is called ‘Round and Round’ and introduces you to the concept of Recall. Place the homestone you were given on the ground somewhere and then walk away for a bit until you can no longer see it. 누르다 ‘티’ and a 3-second countdown will begin. At the end of those 3 초, you will teleported from wherever you are directly to the Homestone. 이후, interact with the Homestone by pressing ‘이자형’ while it is highlighted, and you will have 3 seconds until you are teleported back to wherever you were previously. Complete your quest and move on to receive the General Store blueprint.

My Kind of Town

You acquired a blueprint reward for learning to use the Homestone, and also acquired a new quest called ‘My Kind of Town’ which introduces building blueprints and vendors. Open your inventory and use ‘이자형’ to learn the blueprint for the General Store. 당신은 필요합니다 8 tough grass and 50 wood to craft it, but when you do you will be rewarded with your first building and the first member of your little township- Divo! Divo sells a limited supply of iron ore, dirt blocks, cobblestone, 물약 (scaling to level), and occasionally some seeds. Inventory restocks every day at midnight for all vendors. Keep an eye out for those seeds, as they are cheap and useful. You will also see some upgrades for other buildings here eventually, from stash space to a barn upgrade. Keep an eye on her. 퀘스트를 완료하세요 ‘My Kind of Town’ and move on. You will receive a blueprint for the Trusty Bank! Open you inventory and hit ‘이자형’ to learn it.

There is no quest attached to the Trusty Bank, but you should go ahead and build it anyway. It is a very valuable tool, and your only real source of storage in the game. 당신은 필요합니다 25 Cobblestone, 25 목재, 그리고 10 iron bars to complete the blueprint. Once built and placed, 너’ll meet the Banker, K.A! Speaking to them directly is how you access your personal bank storage. 현재, you start with two tabs, but you can purchase upgrades from Divo to increase that to 12 tabs eventually. Each tab has 30 available slots. The large safe to the right of K.A. is the shared bank, which is the shared stash that allows a sharing of items between all characters. It only has one actual storage tab, and the rest are dedicated to cosmetic items and ancient items you’ve unlocked by acquiring them on other characters. All ancient items and cosmetics are free to grab from here, and ancients will start at rank 1. So if you want to multiclass, this is how. Keep in mind that you must have acquired the ancient on another character before it is available in the shared stash.

It Calls from Below

The next quest is called ‘It Calls from Below’ and directs you to kill Gath’ack at the bottom of the muddy layer. The muddy layer is below the dirt layer which you are currently standing on, and Gath’ack can be found near the bottom of that area behind a red door. Each quest after that will follow a similar pattern, going deeper and deeper until…

Once you’ve completed the game in Normal mode, I encourage you to continue on to the higher difficulties. Itemization expands massively as you progress through each difficulty, and Normal is not even remotely representative of the full experience.
