“Summon Monster” is probably the most powerful spell in the game. This guide describes how to obtain as many copies of the spell book “Summon Monster” as possible. You can choose to follow as much or as little of this guide as possible in order to relatively increase your chances of finding “Summon Monster” 魔法の本.
General Rules
- Definition: “Summon Monster Book” will be referred to as “SMB” throughout.
- Definition: “学者”, when used as a verb, means to toss items into a Scholar shrine until you receive a spell, or spell/scroll.
- Note especially the general rules of scholaring – they are some of the most important to follow precisely.
- This guide assumes you fortuitously get Scholars and Derangeds at opportune times
クラス: メイジ, so that your natural int is increased.
バックグラウンド: 本の虫, so that your first read of SMB will start at level 2
Higher level spells will typically be found in the later areas
Higher level spells will increase the probability of the Scholar dropping higher level spells, including SMB.
- Verified in build 1.10.0: using two high level spells in a Scholar increases the probability of the Scholar dropping high level spells more than just using 1 high level + low level spell, and more than just using 1 high level + 3 巻物
To increase the chance of merchants selling spellbooks, assume the general style of saving money to buy cheap stuff, especially scrolls for use for scholaring. This is because buying anything from a merchant will increase all future merchants’ probabilities of selling extra items, which in turn increases the probability that any future merchant will sell a spellbook or scroll.
Save all scrolls for scholaring; do not use any scrolls, even identified ones.
Be careful of cursed items as you want to save Scrolls of Uncurse for scholaring. This means you should use the Shackled liberally. Note however that boss chests never contain cursed items, so equip them freely.
Never use the Smith unless your inventory is full and you’ve explored the entire level. Cast all items, including but not limited to otherwise-Smith-able ones into the Deranged, as the Deranged can output scrolls, whereas the Smith can only output equipment.
Check for breakable walls everywhere if you can’t find a spellbook in a given level. Items with
Unbounded sight and Rings of Seltioc can help with this.
Verified in build 1.09.6: Rare scrolls will increase the probability a Scholar will drop a high level spell
Feel free to start stealing from the merchant once he reaches max items (5, 私は思う)
Rules for Specific Areas: Caves
- Expected spellbook count: 4
- This includes specifically going to Ruins instead of the 3rd level of the Caves, because there often are 2 spellbooks in the Ruins
- Max spellbook count: 6
- This includes specifically going to the Ruins AND the possibility of a merchant selling a spellbook. It is extremely rare that the merchant will sell 2 spellbooks in the caves, しかしそれは可能です.
- Assume that there is no chance of acquiring an SMB in the caves, via spellbooks/scrolls found in the levels, sold by merchants, or by scholaring. Note this implies you should not toss items to the Scholar in the Caves, 期間.
Rules for Specific Areas: 森
Same as the Caves except the expected and max spellbook counts are reduced by 1 due to the alternate third level not providing an extra one or two spellbooks.
Note that occasionally it appears to be the case that a level in the Forest will not contain a spellbook. If you suspect this is the case for a given level then it might be a good idea to break the general rule about scroll usage and use a magic mapping, if the magic mapping is already identified and you deem it prudent. So in this case, できれば’t find a spell on a given Forest level use your judgment about magic mappings if they’re identified and available.
Rules for Specific Areas: カタコンベ
Same as the Forest except for 2 もの:
- そこには’s no chance of a spellbook not appearing; each level in the Catacombs will contain a spellbook.
- You may start Scholaring now, as there now is a chance SMB will drop.
Rules for Specific Areas: リフト
Scholar as much as possible.
