Repairing and pumping are often overlooked as simple tasks in Blazing Sails. しかし, not only does it reward some of the best XP in the game, it is also extremely important for survival and has some surprising tricks to aid inefficiency.
Basics and Awareness
- Pump first, then repair. try to keep the pump constantly running until all repairs are done and the ship is completely dry.
- Keep your ears open for ladder squeaks or fighting sounds. You can probably time your repairing for up to the last second before the fight comes to you.
- If you are repairing or pumping and danger is around the ship try to do your job while moving a little bit. Keep your aim focused on the task but small movements are helpful to keep you from getting headshot multiple times by a surprise enemy you didn’t see who got behind you.
- Try to familiarise yourself with the timing of the pump in all 3 stages of the upgrade. This way you can avoid wasting time waiting for the pump to finish which could have been spent repairing it.
- Especially if playing on a galleon, grab a large enough bunch of wood that you don’t need to waste time getting more later. If you are not on a galleon grab the appropriate amount but don’t forget to deposit it back into the ship when you are done. You wouldn’t want to forget you were carrying a lot of wood when you later died on an enemy ship.
- If wood resources are low be mindful of how much you are carrying and how much is left. You want there to be enough left in the barrel such that other players can quickly grab their share of wood and start repairing if necessary, not wait for you to drop some so that they may help.
- It is often best to repair while having entryway (s) visible in your peripheral vision.
- If you know what size of holes you have you can more easily judge how much wood is required to fix them. Be sure not to underestimate though, you wouldn’t want to waste time grabbing more wood a second time. You can familiarise yourself with how much wood is necessary for what size holes and what cannonballs or damage will generally cause which hole sizes.
- Fights being decided by very close water levels are not uncommon. If you have nothing better to do making sure you have repaired every last hole and pumped till completely dry could be the difference between winning and losing. It is also very useful because then all teammates will be immediately notified through a flashing meter exactly when the ship starts taking damage.
Efficiency Improvements and Surprising Tricks
- Don’t always stand directly in front of where the cannonball landed- heavy cannonballs go through the ship. Either because of lack of choice, or because they are smart, some players will be shooting at the same location hoping to hit repairers of the holes they just made.
- You can currently still reload guns while pumping.
- After pumping has restarted you can at any time hold the pump button again. This way you can avoid the human timing error between noticing when the pump has fully stopped and pressed the pump again.
- The pump can be activated while repairing some close by holes at the same time.
- It is a tiny bit more time efficient to split up and not be repairing the same holes as other repairers.
- If you know you are about to take damage (from the zone, or imminent fighting) you can start running the pump beforehand and it will likely still be operating after damage causes water to enter the ship. This saves time and water level.
