This guide details all helicopter weapon systems currently in the game.
Pistolets & Canons
These weapons are the most basic weapon found on a helicopter. Essentially a point-and-shoot weapon they lack the accuracy and firepower of guided missiles or rockets but provide an effective means of suppression or area effect.
Some of these weapons are mounted in turrets allowing helicopters to attack targets not directly in front of them.
30mm Canon (Apache Turret)
GUIDANCE: TADS / Inertia Guidance
AMMUNITION: 30mm HEDP (High Explosive Dual Purpose)
EFFECT RANGE: 1,500m
MAXIMUM RANGE: 5,000m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Lightly Armoured, Soft Targets, small structures
ERA: N / A
WEIGHT: N / A
COÛT: N / A
This 30mm canon is mounted in all Apache models as an area-effect weapon. It lacks the firepower to kill Main Battle Tanks but is more than capable of destroying lightly armoured APC/IFV and soft vehicles.
M621 20mm Canon Pod
GUIDANCE: Aucun
AMMUNITION: 20mm Armour Piercing
EFFECT RANGE: 1,500m
MAXIMUM RANGE: 4,000m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Lightly Armoured, Soft Targets, small structures
ERA: Pre-1985 (LOW TECH)
WEIGHT: 33kilos
COÛT: 10dp
The M621 is a fast firing 20mm canon designed to attack lightly armoured vehicles and other soft targets.
It is available to a number of European helicopters and, dans la plupart des cas, can be dual-mounted to the left and right of the helicopter.
The canon benefits a narrow dispersion pattern allowing skilled pilots to easily strafe targets.
Fusées
Rockets are generally small unguided missiles. toutefois, new technology is blurring the line between rockets and guided missiles. This section will also cover guided rocket technology such as the DAGR system.
SNEB Rocket Pod
GUIDANCE: Aucun
AMMUNITION: 7 x 68m High Explosive Rockets
EFFECT RANGE: 2,000m
MAXIMUM RANGE: 4,000m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Lightly Armoured, Soft Targets, small structures
ERA: Pre-1985 (LOW TECH)
WEIGHT: 15kilos
COÛT: 3dp
The SNEB rocket pod is often carried by European helicopters and is similar to the HYDRA 70 système.
The rockets are unguided but fly quickly making the system quite accurate. Direct hits are often not required due to the blast radius of the HE warhead.
M261 HYDRA 70 Rocket Pod
GUIDANCE: Aucun
AMMUNITION: 19 x 70m High Explosive Rockets
EFFECT RANGE: 2,000m
MAXIMUM RANGE: 4,000m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Lightly Armoured, Soft Targets, small structures
ERA: Pre-1985 (LOW TECH)
WEIGHT: 25kilos
COÛT: 5dp
The HYDRA 70 system carries 19 unguided but fast-flying rockets that can quickly saturate an area. Direct hits are often not required due to the blast radius of the HE warhead.
Guided Air-to-Ground Missiles
These missiles form the basis of any attack helicopter allowing it to hit targets accurately and at a great distance.
ATGM-71B TOW
GUIDANCE: Wire Guided SACLOS (Semi Active Command Line Of Sight)
RANGE: 3,750m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Réservoirs, APCs, IFVs, Soft Targets and small structures.
ERA: Pre-1985 (LOW TECH)
WEIGHT: 23kilos
COÛT: 10dp
The ATGM-71B TOW is the lowest-tier guided anti-tank missile. It is cheap and is available to most BLUFOR helicopters.
Its main drawbacks are its comparatively short range, long flight times, et, because missile control is via a physical wire, if the range to target exceeds 3,740m the wire will break and control will be lost.
HOT-3
GUIDANCE: Wire Guided SACLOS (Semi Active Command Line Of Sight)
RANGE: 4,500m
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Réservoirs, APCs, IFVs, Soft Targets and small structures.
ERA: 1985-2000 (HIGH TECH)
WEIGHT: 30kilos
COÛT: 15dp
The HOT-3 is a significant improvement over the basic TOW. Il’s much longer range allows helicopters to take out high-threat targets from relative safety.
It still has the main drawbacks of wire guidance, such as wire breaks at maximum range, but its flight time to target is less than the TOW.
The HOT-3 is available to most European helicopters.
AGM-114L Hellfire
GUIDANCE: RADAR
RANGE: 12,000m + (limited by RADAR range)
EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Réservoirs, APCs, IFVs, Soft Targets, and small structures.
ERA: 2000 – 2020+ (ADVANCED TECH)
WEIGHT: 60kilos
COÛT: 30dp
Le « R » version of the Hellfire allows it to strike targets outside of visual range due to its RADAR guidance system. This range allows helicopters to pick off high-threat targets well outside the target’s ability to fire back.
When coupled to the AH-64D’s RADAR this missile can be fired at targets without direct line of sight allowing the helicopter to remain masked behind terrain.
The missile uses a « top down » attack mode for targets exceeding 1,000m in the range allowing it to penetrate the thinner top armour of tanks. For targets closer, it will do a standard direct attack which may be less effective.
Its main drawbacks are weight and cost being nearly three times as heavy and three times as expensive as the TOW missile.
