I have no idea if this is a known exploit/glitch or not, but it might be something you wanna take a look at if you wanna get some of those no damage achievements, but don’t feel like putting in the legwork because reasons.
The Intro
Okay, so the gist of this exploit is that it’s a weird loophole in how the checkpoints work in some of the bosses that tricks the game into thinking that you’ve done it without taking any damage.
Just so we get it clear right out of the way so you don’t waste your time, this only works on about half of the bosses that you get the no damage achievements from.
The bosses it WORKS for
- Monsoon
- Sundowner (kind of)
- MG EXCELSUS
- (DLC) Armstrong
The bosses it DOES NOT work for
- Mistral
- Jetstream Sam
- (Hauptspiel) Armstrong
- Khamsin
Sorry if any of the ones that aren’t covered by this exploit are the ones you wanted, but this is more about me sharing this weird discovery rather than trying to pinpoint a cheap strat for every one of them. Habe es? Habe es. Lass uns gehen.
The Exploit / Schritt 1
So the first part of this exploit is probably one you’ve already got if you’re trying to get these, but just so we cover this base:
Unlock the boss levels in Chapter Select
This can be done through either inputting the Konami code or by completing the base game and DLCs, and while this might seem like a pointless thing to highlight, the exploit in question will not work outside of the individual boss levels. Normal levels do not work with this – I’ve tried it. So when doing this, only do it in those levels or nothing will happen, cause I think it’s an oversight.
The Exploit / Schritt 2
Jetzt, from this point on, things are going to be pretty straightforward. Just fight whichever boss of the above you’ve chosen as you normally would – don’t worry about taking damage at all at this point. It isn’t a concern.
Dann, you might notice that every one of these bosses has a heavily scripted finisher. One where there’s a checkpoint right before it happens.
So this is what you do: Follow through with the finisher and kill the boss as you normally would, Dann, the INSTANT the score screen showing you your letter grade vanishes, pausiere das Spiel, und schlagen „Neustart“ This will take you back to your last checkpoint – welche, if your game hasn’t screwed up, will be right at the start of the scripted finisher. Then you can just follow through with it as you normally would, und voilà! Your score screen should come up showing that you took no damage, and the respective achievement is yours. You successfully tricked the mean, unsuspecting game that you DIDN’T slug your way through that fight. Gut gemacht!
Some Other Notes
Now that’s pretty much all there is to the exploit. Ziemlich einfach, huh? I’m sure someone else has discovered it before, but since I’ve not heard about it, I thought I’d share.
Jetzt, there are a few other things to note with regards to making it happen:
- MG EXCELSUS has a ridiculously short window of time between when the score screen fades out and the level ends, so be on that pause button ASAP or you’ll have to do the fight all over again.
- I don’t actually know if the shenanigans with the score screen is essentiell to making this work – it likely isn’t since I’ve seen some weirdness with the checkpoints in boss levels outside of it – but I would stick with it just in case since it’s what worked for me.
- Sundowner’s version of this exploit works a little differently than the others cause the last checkpoint before the finisher throws you right at the beginning of the slider segment. It isn’t that difficult to get through there without getting hit and the exploit still works, but something to be mindful of.
- Jetstream Sam and (Hauptspiel) Armstrong have no versions of this exploit, to my knowledge, that work because neither of them have proper mid-fight checkpoints (not counting Armstrong’s pre-fight phases), and their score screens don’t show up before the fade out to cutscene would normally be.
- Similar deal with Khamsin: no midfight checkpoints, not even before that wack finisher.
- Mistral has plenty of mid-fight checkpoints, but the last one she has is right at the beginning of her last phase, so this exploit doesn’t really work for her.
Image Results
Below are some images that prove this is very much possible. Note the impossibly low times and near-nonexistent combos – I by no means tout this as a way of achieving high rankings. Only no damage.
Notiz: The below images were taken on Easy difficulty for brevity’s sake, but I’ve tested and it works on any difficulty. You get the achievement so long as you do it on Hard or above.
