This guide will help you understand all the things you need to do in Common’hood. It will explain the requirements for quests, أغراض, NPCs, some crafting recipes, and it will also describe all the different levels and how you progress in the game.
General Gameplay Tips
Playing the Game
In Common’Hood, you don’t have to worry about bad things happening, like people getting hurt. You might get some disadvantages (they’re called debuffs), but nothing serious. Nobody can die, and you don’t have to eat food. Moving around might be a little tricky because of things blocking your way, but it’s not a big deal. The main character, Nikki, can carry a lot of heavy stuff without getting tired.
Getting Around
It’s a good idea to always run in the game. You can do this by holding down the LShift key. Nikki’s regular walking speed is quite slow, so running is better. If you find yourself far from your home base, you can press the ESC key to pause the game, ثم انقر “Back to Home” to instantly go back to where you set up your camp.
UI workarounds
- أحيانا, when you talk to a character named Alcott, the game’s menu might get a bit messed up. To fix it, just press the ESC key after talking to Alcott, and everything will work again.
- If you’re checking on a character’s shelter from the Community menu and it doesn’t show all the things you’ve put in it, you can make it right. Just click on the bed to “refresh” the shelter’s status.
- When you want to make things at the crafting stations, you don’t have to keep pressing the “Hold to Craft” زر. You can hold down the space bar instead. It’s easier. But be careful because if the station needs fixing, the space bar will do that too. If you want to fix the station just a little bit, like to 75%, you can keep the repair menu closed by clicking the little wrench icon. But keep an eye on how broken the station is so it doesn’t get too bad.
Blueprints
Blueprints are like special plans for building things in the game. They take up space in your inventory, ولكن لا تقلق, you can throw them away if you want by right-clicking (that’s RMB). الجزء الرائع هو, you can have as many copies as you want, like magic! You can find all your blueprints in the Blueprint tab, which looks like a symbol that never ends (∞). To use a blueprint, just double-click it or drag it to an empty slot on your hotbar.
Crafting Screws
Here’s a trick to make screws: When you use scrap metal, the general workbench gives you four screws for each piece of scrap metal, but the bench grinder only gives you one screw for each scrap metal. لذا, use the general workbench to make screws. أوه, and don’t forget, you need the bench grinder to make metal rods and wheels. There might be more things like this, but I haven’t discovered them yet.
Generators, قوة, Gasoline
Generators need gas to run, but they keep using it even if you’re not using much power. To save time and gas, you can do a few things:
- Run everywhere (Hold LShift).
- Quickly click through the NPC’s talking.
- Go to bed at 9:00 مساءً.
- Don’t have too many generators. Keep extra workbenches in storage until you need them.
لكن, you know what? Gasoline isn’t too expensive, and I like a relaxed game, so I just set up all the crafting stations I have, add a generator when I need it, and keep them sort of full. It’s easy and chill.
What to do 9:00-11:00 مساءً
Between 9:00 مساءً (21:00) و 11:00 مساءً (23:00) في اللعبة, Nikki gets really tired and can’t do most things. But don’t worry, you can still do some important stuff during these two minutes. Here’s what you can do:
- Place blueprints: Press V to turn them into build orders.
- Build constructions and construct buildings.
- Pick up stations (this is a new feature as of October 2023).
- Place stations, but you can’t access their stuff.
- Assign Commoners to a bed or tent.
- Organize Nikki’s inventory and hotbar.
- Manage your community, which is useful for assigning jobs for the next day.
- Change research by clicking on a higher-tier skill to research all the skills needed.
- Contribute toward community contracts.
- Pause the game and “Return to Home” (although it takes you to a point in the current level, not your camp).
- Make those annoying, flashing tutorials go away by pressing H.
Demo Limitations and Cheats
For players with the demo version, there are a few things to keep in mind. The Pumping Grounds are blocked off, merchant contracts don’t work, and it’s likely that the Plethora Project doesn’t update the demo. لذا, it’s best not to give Alcott any money for contracts in the demo.
As a little cheat for the demo, you can build a staircase over the brick wall that separates the West Wing from the Pumping Grounds, even though you’re not supposed to get there in the demo. Once you’re there, you can collect items that are meant to be off-limits to demo players. But be careful not to go into the “background” part of the scene with large fluid tanks; if you do, you won’t be able to get back, and you’ll have to reload or start over. Who knows, maybe this trick will work in the full game too!

List of Characters
I enjoy calling the people in the community “Commoners” because the name of our community is “The Common.” Here is the order in which they show up in the Community tab. To boost their Shelter rating and give them a little boost in their activities, you can enhance each Commoner’s room. If you decorate with items that they like, it will make the Shelter rating even better.

I’m not sure how the characters’ food preferences impact them or how to use that in the game.
Unlocking New Locations
When you unlock a new location, make sure to explore it thoroughly. Open every container you come across, and don’t worry about what’s inside; just press Ctrl+T to collect everything, then close the container. You can organize your loot later when you return to your Stockpile. You don’t need to clear debris or rubble in these new areas because the Commoners can handle that task. Set up your tent and sleep in the new area after 9:00 PM to move the Commoners there, even if they haven’t moved their quarters yet. Set their task to “Clear” since they can’t do other things without their belongings. Once the area is clean, you can go back to your main encampment and continue with your usual activities.
Recruiting Commoners
As you progress through the game, you’ll recruit new characters in a specific order. Some characters may require backtracking to previous levels to recruit them. The Common starts with Nikki, the main character, and rapidly grows to include three more people, eventually reaching a total of 17 Commoners. There are also two characters, Alcott and Cedric, who can’t be recruited in the traditional sense but will follow the Common as soon as Nikki greets them. بالإضافة إلى ذلك, there are four members of “the Ant Farm” who cannot be recruited, as the final cutscene will explain.
After recruiting each character, don’t forget to assign them tasks. Go to the Community tab in your inventory, select the new character, click on the “Jobs” زر, and choose “New Task.” افتراضيا, it’s set to “Building,” but you might want to pick “Production” to increase your item output. Make sure there are enough raw materials in the Common’s inventory box, called the “Stockpile” – it’s a plain red metal box in each of the main areas. “Clearing” tasks are helpful until all debris in an area is cleared, but keep in mind that they won’t clear some large rubble until Nikki obtains specific “keys.”
The West Wing, before the bridge
Before getting your first character (Mo), you need to introduce yourself to Mo, Rhett, and Ash (in any order), and then talk to Alcott to complete the first quest. You then get your starting equipment; be sure to place “Dad’s Books” to start researching the tech tree.
Commoner #1: Mo
أولاً, talk to Mo, Rhett, رماد, and Alcott. ثم, place the Woodcutter from your inventory. Mo will be impressed and ask you to craft 4×4 Columns from Raw Lumber using the Woodcutter.
التالي, Mo will want you to build a planter and give you the blueprints. Note that you don’t actually need a planter to plant anything; you can simply place dirt without any wood to hold it. It stays in place. You can consider selling the planter to Alcott at the general store.
Mo will also request you to grow potatoes and provide you with the seeds. You can find more potato seeds in a chest below the dark alcove near where Alcott hangs out. After completing this simple quest, Mo will join Nikki’s cause.
Commoner #2: Rhett
To recruit Rhett, you need to learn the Electronics 101 skill to craft electric motors and then learn the Advanced Electronics 1 skill to craft a micro-controller. Across from Alcott, there is a pre-built general workbench. Inspect it, and Rhett will approach you, asking you to repair it. You’ll need Electronic tools, which you can find upstairs on the catwalk. Make sure to purchase Soldering tools from Alcott.
Rhett will then request you to craft and place electric motors in the Stockpile. Once that’s done, he’ll encourage you to fix the crane, which is necessary to access the next area. After you complete this task, Rhett will become part of the Common.
Commoner #3: رماد
To recruit Ash, you’ll need to clear some debris and learn Machine Manufacturing 1 to craft the Planar. Ash will be impressed by your initiative but will want you to clear all the debris. You can do this manually by holding the mouse button for a few seconds per pile, or you can have Mo and/or Rhett help you with it.
التالي, Ash will ask you to craft a Planar. أولاً, create a Metal Workbench at the generic workbench (which requires repairing it, as Rhett’s first task). You’ll need Metal tools (buy them from Alcott) and a Vice (find one upstairs).
Once the Metal Workbench is built, use it to craft the Planar. You’ll require Welding Tools, which can also be found upstairs. Following this, Ash will provide you with the blueprint for “Floor Module” and ask you to build some. Note that you should have 160 4x4s and 348 1″ panels to craft four modules.
Build the Bridge
To build the bridge, you first need to research (الأخشاب) Details and then Heavy Timber. Talk to Alcott to get the blueprints. Create two Railing Sections (استخدام 96 4x4s) and a Bridge Section (استخدام 40 4x8s and 200 1″ panels). You can have Rhett or another character construct these sub-components, but the blueprint for the Bridge Section w Railing must be completed by Nikki (أنت).
بعد ذلك, speak to Alcott again to trigger a small cutscene. Following the cutscene, talk to Alcott once more to receive the blueprint for the completed bridge and ten bridge sections. You only need seven bridge sections, as you’ve already built one, so the extra four are unnecessary.
Ensure the area in front of the sinkhole is clear. If you had set up any crops there, you’ll need to harvest them and remove the dirt and planters to make space for the bridge. Once the bridge is assembled, move the crane into place using the control panel you fixed for Rhett. Hold A+S+E for several seconds to get it over the bridge, and a cutscene will trigger once it’s in the right spot.
The West Wing (Post-Bridge) & Pumping Grounds
After successfully placing the bridge, you gain access to the remaining part of the West Wing and the Pumping Grounds. هنا, you can meet Cedric, the second and last merchant, as well as Frankie and Bennie, who are by the oil-barrel fire and are wearing gas masks.
In the second part of the West Wing, it’s covered in debris, making it impossible to place a tent for the Common to move here. You can attempt to clear space for the tent yourself, but then there won’t be much left for the Commoners to clear. To resolve this issue, consider turning the corner and setting up camp in the Pumping Grounds near Mark.
Please note that although Ruby and Mark are nearby, you can’t recruit them until you can build a Carpentry bench and grow diverse crops. While it’s easier to get Mark before Ruby, I recommend working toward the Kitchen (helpful for feeding your group) to recruit Ruby before focusing on a Composting station (which isn’t as helpful at this point) to get Mark.
Mo’s Quest: Expand the Farm
Mo wants to see crop diversification. Instead of buying seeds from Cedric, go up the stairs near Ruby’s tent and find a wooden chest with a good number of seeds to get started. It appears that Mo may not complete his own quest by planting these seeds; Nikki might need to do it.
You’ll need these vegetables to make soup to recruit Ruby (see below), so planting early will allow for early harvesting.
Rhett’s Quest: Carpentry
Prerequisites: Research Advanced Carpentry (after Rhett gives you the book).
Speak to Rhett, and then talk to him again. He will provide a book on Advanced Carpentry and request you to build a Carpentry Workbench, which is essential for crafting the next workbenches needed for progress. You’ll need Wood Tools, Wood Glue, and Sandpaper, all of which can be found across the bridge. بالإضافة إلى ذلك, you’ll need to craft 200 Screws, which can be done quickly at the Generic Workbench. Avoid using the Bench Grinder (when you get it) because it produces only 1 Screw per metal, whereas the workbench gives you 4 Screws per metal.
Commoner #4: Ruby
Prerequisites: Research Cooking and build the Kitchen station at the Carpentry bench.
Ruby initially seems rude and stand-offish. To recruit her, cook some Hot Soup and have it in your inventory. Talk to her, and then gather Meat, Carrots, and Onions. The specific quantities you need may vary.
After recruiting Ruby, talk to her to receive the Pipe Bender quest (see below).
Commoner #5: Mark
Prerequisites: Research Composting and build the Composting station at the Carpentry bench.
Engage in multiple conversations with Mark. You can obtain a Pickaxe from Mark before he joins the cause, which will allow you to clear all the rubble and debris. Keep in mind that rubble piles sometimes conceal valuable items, such as robot parts.
Mark will require you to build another station before he joins the Common. After you create and place a compost station, speak to Mark again. He’ll become part of the Common, and then talk to him once more. His quest involves “finding information on recycling,” but that won’t happen until you find Dale in the Badlands, so you can set that quest aside and continue.
Ruby’s Quest: Build a Pipe Bender
Prerequisites: …
Ruby’s first quest is relatively straightforward but essential for progress. The Pipe Bender provides access to the Machine Workbench (see below).
Following this quest, Ruby will task you with “finding a space” (The Badlands, far from your current location). For now, set this quest aside.
Ash’s Quest: Build a Machine Workbench
Prerequisites: Research Machine Manufacturing 2 and build a Pipe Bender (see Ruby’s Quest).
You’ll need this Machine station to create a Bench Grinder (build it at the Metal workbench) …
Repairing the Elevator
Prerequisites: Make and place a Bench Grinder, which requires a Machine Workbench (from Ash’s quest).
To fix the elevator, you’ll need a metal wheel, crafted at a Bench Grinder. You’ll also need a micro-controller, a metal disc, and an electric motor.
The Machine Room / Power Room
(This area is referred to as “The Power Room” أو “The Machine Room” in the dialog)
Nikki’s goal is the Administration Wing, but access to the room was blocked by an explosion that destroyed the main entrance. Building a staircase to reach it isn’t an option due to game limitations. You’ll need to go the long way around, starting with the sewer entrance.
Rhett’s Quest: Tinker Station
Prerequisites: …
Commoner #6: Mike
Prerequisites: Create a Mechanics Station at the Carpentry bench and use it to build a BBQ Station.
Impress Mike with a grill, and he’ll ask you to gather meat and spices to cook brisket. The specific quantities may vary.
Mike’s quest … (beer! The book required for brewing is found much later).
Commoner #7: Sahar
Prerequisites: Recruit Mike, and build a Pottery station.
Sahar’s quest … (Ceramic oven, 3D ceramic printer, after you get H3X).
Fix the Flood Gate
Prerequisites: Drill Press (to make the Reinforced Plates), Mechanics Station (to make the Valves), Tinker Station (to make the Servo Motors) — both Mechanics & Tinker stations are crafted at the Carpentry station.
At the top of the power room, several panels need fixing. The three electrical boxes require two Valves and two Reinforced Plates (six of each, total). The fuse box needs four fuses. The switch box requires two Servo Motors and two wires.
Once you’ve completed these tasks, the hidden floodgate will open, allowing access to the sewer tunnel.
The Machine Room / Power Room
In the Machine Room, also known as the Power Room, Nikki’s main goal is to reach the Administration Wing. لكن, the main entrance was destroyed by an explosion, so you’ll need to take a longer route starting with the sewer entrance.
Rhett’s quest: Tinker Station
Prerequisites: …
Commoner #6: Mike
Prerequisites: Use the Carpentry station to make a Mechanics Station, then use it to build a BBQ Station. After impressing him with a grill, Mike will ask you to gather meat and spices to cook brisket. The specific quantities needed may vary.
Mike’s quest … (beer! The book required for brewing can be found much later).
Commoner #7: Sahar
Prerequisites: Recruit Mike and build a Pottery station. Sahar’s quest … (Ceramic oven, 3D ceramic printer, after you get H3X).
Fix the Flood Gate
Prerequisites: Use the Drill Press to make the Reinforced Plates, Mechanics Station to make the Valves, and Tinker Station to make the Servo Motors. Both Mechanics and Tinker stations are crafted at the Carpentry station.
Upstairs, in the top part of the power room, you’ll need to fix several panels. The three electrical boxes require two Valves and two Reinforced Plates each (six of each in total). The fuse box needs four fuses. The switch box requires two Servo Motors and two wires.
Once you complete these tasks, the semi-hidden flood gate will open, granting access to the sewer tunnel.
Underground Passage (Sewer) & Secret Garden
Between the Machine Room and the Factory Entrance are two small areas where you can’t build anything. There are some items in the sewer, although I haven’t been able to find anything to pick up in the Secret Garden.
Commoner #11: Al
Prerequisites: Research the Anarchy book given by Al, as well as the requirements to make the Clay Oven and bake Empenadas. You’ll also need to craft a Lathe.
Al requires multiple dialogues to recruit; he’s initially resistant to social interaction. Bake some Empenadas in the Clay Oven (even though he doesn’t actually eat them, it impresses him).
After obtaining Hard Wood Panels in the Factory Entrance, use the Lathe to craft a Go Game Set and present it to Al. With a little more dialogue, he agrees to join the Common.
Al’s quest … (musical instruments, which all require softwood, not available yet)
In the Secret Garden, you’ll only find a cutscene with Olivia, ال “leader” of the Ant Farm. Continue on to the Factory Entrance.
The Factory Entrance
The Factory Entrance is another important area in the game. Note that because Monty has no specific requirements to recruit, you can get him without recruiting Mark, Ruby, Mike, or Sahar. لكن, it’s recommended to get them first or shortly afterward.
Commoner #8: Monty
Prerequisites: لا أحد!
Monty is a crucial Commoner in the game because completing his quests is necessary to craft CPU chips, which are required for most end-game technology and several quests.
You can find Monty by heading to the overgrown field with the factory’s front doors on your left once you leave the Secret Garden. Go to the right, all the way to the fence. Monty is camped out near some freight train boxes.
Aside: Monty’s story is quite moving and sadly, reflects a disturbingly common situation in the real world. It serves as a reminder to cherish and protect children and support families.
Ash’s Quest: Build a Robot
…
Commoner #9: H3X
Prerequisites: Complete your first robot (see Ash’s quest).
…
Commoner #10: Ono
Prerequisites: Acquire fabric (the specific amount may vary), and recruit H3X.
…
Clearing the Way: Jackhammer
Move to the factory entrance with your tent and set everyone to clear rubble and debris. Soon, you’ll find the next key, a jackhammer, which is needed to clear some rubble blocking an underground tunnel. للأسف, you can’t simply tear down the plywood separating the two areas.
The Glasshouse
The Glasshouse is a unique area in the game with plant life rather than trash, making it a more pleasant environment. لكن, it may not be the best place to establish your base as there are still two more areas to explore before the end. Keeping your Commoners in the Glasshouse will involve a lot of back-and-forth traveling. بالإضافة إلى ذلك, the Glasshouse has limited building space, so settling here may require creative use of vertical space and deciding which crafting stations to deploy and which to store.
Commoner #12: Travis
Prerequisites: Clear the debris, and possibly research something (specifics may vary).
…
Commoner #13: Sheira
Prerequisites: Find Wildseeds and recruit Travis.
…
Dig Another Hole
Set up camp in the Glasshouse to bring your Commoners, and have them clear everything as usual. You will uncover a chainsaw, which is needed to clear the rubble blocking the next underground passage. When ready, move on to the Badlands.
The Badlands
The Badlands live up to their name, with a desolate and unattractive landscape. While it offers ample space, it might not be the most visually appealing place to spend time.
Commoner #14: Dale
Prerequisites: Retrieve his Confederate flag and construct an antenna (specifics may vary).
…
Commoner #17: أنيتا
Prerequisites: Recruit Tako (see The Shipyard in the next section).
…
Moving On
Find the bolt cutters in the room behind the tunnel exit (more specific details are available in another guide). هذه المرة, you don’t need to clear the area to move on. لكن, you must break down the fence leading to the last underground tunnel, which takes a while, so consider stabilizing the mouse and taking a short break.
The Shipyard
The Shipyard is the last area where you can build, and it’s perhaps the least visually unappealing of the larger spaces.
Commoner #15: Dafoe
Prerequisites: …, fix his server rack (requires CPUs, see Monty’s quest).
…
Commoner #16: Tako
Prerequisites: Retrieve his “Red Globe” (baseball mitt) and gain full Trust with Mo (complete all Mo quests).
…
It’s Locked…
The door to the Administration Wing is locked and can only be opened with a special keycard. لحسن الحظ, Alcott has it and will give it to you once you have built a set of housing plans designed by Nikki’s mother.
If you complete all these tasks, you can proceed to the Admin office and watch the final cutscene, which explains the Ant Farm and some of Nikki’s fragmented memories. The credits roll, but you likely have more to do in your cooperative, so you can continue playing after “beating the game.”
أغراض, Inventory, and Other Stuff
Materials and items management is an essential aspect of the game. Here are some recommendations on how to handle your inventory and resources effectively:
Materials and Items
The game provides you with finite resources, and while you have a significant amount, it’s essential to manage them well. One resource that might need careful management is Scrap Metal, which is used to make Gears, Screws, and Reinforced Plates. You can buy additional resources if necessary. Complete merchant contracts to unlock more items for sale, research the Haggling skill to reduce prices, and sell excess food for profit. Towards the end-game, consider building a Recycling Station (أو أكثر) to turn Inorganic Waste and E-Waste into useful parts.
Where to Store Everything
Store raw ingredients and intermediate materials in the Stockpile so Commoners can access them. لكن, keep certain “Tool” items in your inventory as they cannot be crafted and are generally used to build workbenches.
Recommended Stockpile
- Raw Wood/Lumber & Panels
- Various types of wood for building orders
- 1″ Panels and CRT panels
- Copper Cables & Wires
- Scrap Metal (most of it)
- Metal Gears, Plates, Discs, Rods
- Raw Steel, Aluminum & Plastic
- Pipes: Steel, Aluminum & PVC
- All types of seeds
- Raw crops for Commoners to cook
Recommended Inventory
- Metal Tools
- Welding Tools
- Soldering Tools
- Machine Tools
- Vices
- Gardening Tools
- Woodworking Tools
- Wood Glue
- Sandpaper
- Some Scrap Metal for repairs
- Saw Blades for repairs
Inventory Management
Keep in mind that all Stockpiles and Food Cellars share the same inventory. If space becomes limited, consider moving items that are not used as ingredients by someone’s assigned Production job into your inventory or a spare chest.
Keys
Store “مفتاح” items in chests to keep them out of the way. These items are primarily for unlocking progress and don’t have any use after you initially acquire them. This includes books that unlock new research in the tech tree, ال “rewards” from merchant contracts, car keys, farmer’s market tents, and keys to clear rubble like the shovel, pickaxe, chainsaw, jackhammer, and bolt cutter.
طعام & Cooking
Commoners won’t automatically take ingredients from the food stockpile for cooking or put crops in the item stockpile for cooking. You need to manually transfer items between the two storage containers. This means that you might not want to cook every day to avoid the hassle of moving ingredients and cooked food. Food usage is minimal, and food production is generally high, so the “Hungry” debuff should rarely be a problem unless you go AFK for extended periods without pausing.
