Are you new to the game? في هذا الدليل, we will show you some of the most useful tips and tricks when playing A Highland Song. These tips are usually overlooked if you’re a new player in the game.
Beating the Game
Don’t stress about finishing the game quickly. You’re supposed to play it many times. في كل مرة, you can only see a small part of the world. As you play more, you’ll remember maps and shortcuts. لذا, reaching the lighthouse by Beltane becomes easier on your second or fifth try. Take it easy on your first playthrough, and Hamish will be glad to see you whenever you arrive.
In-Game Weather
Don’t stress about the weather too much. It does affect your health a bit, but not a lot. Waiting for the rain to stop every time can be really boring. أحيانا, there are places where it’s too risky to walk in the rain, and you’ll need to find another way or wait. But most of the time, you can just keep doing what you’re doing, even if you get all wet. Moira is from Scotland, so she can handle getting wet.
Sprinting Tips
أولاً, the sprint button doesn’t make you run faster during regular gameplay; it’s mainly for specific sprint sections. لذا, if you’re using a controller and find it awkward to jump and sprint simultaneously, that’s normal. You’re not supposed to run faster during normal platforming.
If you spot a deer in an area, it means you can sprint from there. Approach the deer, walk alongside it, and you’ll get a prompt to start sprinting.
Once you begin a sprint, you don’t have to keep pressing the button, and you don’t even need to hold down the direction key. Moira will keep running on her own. Just focus on hitting your jump buttons (or button if you chose that option) while sprinting.
Here’s a cool thing: you can stop midway through a sprint if you want. Simply press the opposite direction to where Moira is running, and she’ll stop. While there might not be a reason to do this usually, there’s at least one map where you need to stop midway to drop down to it. If you accidentally stop, no worries—just go back in the original direction, and you’ll get the prompt to start sprinting again.
How to Avoid Dying
If you lose all your health, like falling off something, you don’t really die. You’ll come back, either really close to where you fell and can try again, or sometimes you appear farther away, maybe even before where you were or with a surprise meeting with a character. If you’re really good at the game and hardly ever die, you might want to try it a few times on purpose to discover new things!
الآن, about not dying. Watch your health, of course, and be careful about falling off cliffs. Sleeping in safe places is a good idea. Indoors is the best, and it might even boost your health. If you sleep outdoors, your health might decrease for the next day, and sleeping outside in an exposed area can seriously lower your health.
When it comes to falling off cliffs: if you’re climbing down a steep part and start slipping, quickly press the jump button. أحيانا, this can slow your fall, so you take less or no damage when you land. If you’re sliding fast down a rocky area, pressing the opposite direction might slow you down a bit. أخيرا, consider jumping off things instead of just dropping. You’ll usually land more gently.
As you progress in the game and bless peaks, resting in a blessed area can heal your health beyond its maximum, especially if it was lowered before due to some mishaps.
Map Tips
Confirming maps can be a bit tricky! Even if you’re sure you’re in the right place and check your journal, you might not get the option to confirm the location, making it frustrating!
To make it work, go to a peak, pick a spot on the map, and then head to that location. When you reach the glowing spot you marked, you’ll be asked to confirm (or reject if you made a mistake) the map, unlocking any items there. If it means going back a lot, maybe save that map for your next playthrough and move on.
On a peak, the map choices will exclude places you’ve been, but not all visible from that peak. Don’t spend too much time agonizing over a map; it might not be near here. Some maps look like other places until you find the real spot later on, somewhere else. If you can’t find it, shrug and move on.
If you can’t identify any maps, لا تُصب بالذعر! There’s always another way forward without a map. Just wander around and look for shiny dots indicating something interesting.
For cave map spots, try opening your journal inside the cave to prompt the confirmation. The interface can be picky about where you stand, so try a few times in different spots, and you might succeed even if the first attempt didn’t work.
Restore Your Health
Even if you’re completely healthy, take a moment to rest if you find a resting spot. أحيانا, this action unlocks an item or reveals a new map.
Loot Everything
Even if Moira says she doesn’t need a specific item, like junk, it’s worth picking up. It might contain a map or prove useful later for blessing peaks. If you miss or lose something, لا تقلق; you can go back and retrieve it in the next playthrough. أحيانا, the place where you use an item and where you find it can be far apart, so grabbing everything can be beneficial. Items carry over to the next playthrough, so a little collecting in one run can pay off later. (Interestingly, Moira doesn’t question having a crowbar in her pocket in the next life…)
The only objects you can place on cairns are stones, so grab small stones whenever you can. Some places have piles of them, and there are spots where Moira can skip stones across water. If you take a moment to skip a stone, one will be added to her inventory (even if she skips it, she picks up another one) if she doesn’t have one already.
Confirming and Blessing Peaks
Let’s complete the list of mountains in your journal! If you haven’t seen a peak yet, it’ll be shown in grey. Once you’ve climbed it, it’ll light up in bright colors. Peaks will have a question mark next to the name until you confirm their identity. When you offer the correct blessing, they’ll get a glowing yellow halo.
Guessing the name: even if you’re not sure because your map doesn’t match, take a guess. Sometimes Moira will recall that Uncle Hamish shared an article or map about that name.
Confirming the name: you’ll need a map that includes the peak. Confirm it by finding the marked spot and going there. The peak will be identified in your list. You can also confirm the peak name without solving the map; when you’re on a peak, يختار “This peak?” to identify the area the map refers to, even if you can’t pinpoint where the path/X/marking is. Moira will usually say, “that must be X peak, ثم” or something similar.
Blessing peaks: Each peak has a special item that you can leave on it for a blessing. If you leave the correct item, you’ll unlock a part of the fisherman’s story, the rain will stop, and a light will shine from the sky onto the peak. Resting in the area afterwards will give you more health. أحيانا, this triggers a plot event moving you elsewhere. يتذكر, once you leave the item, don’t take it back! If you do, the peak loses its blessing, it starts raining again, and Queen Morag might be quite disappointed. For most peaks, you can try setting random stuff down and picking it up to check, but be cautious. In a few places, you might lose items, typically when throwing them down a hole. If you drop the wrong thing down the hole, you’ll have to find it again in its original place on a future playthrough; it’s gone for now. لكن, some items, like the dagger, can be found in multiple places and are reusable.
Choosing the right item is crucial. عادة, it’s something related to the peak’s name, or Uncle Hamish might drop a clue in one of his random stories. Sometimes the connection is a bit mysterious. If you have the correct item in your inventory, it will be one of the options on the first try. Give those three items a shot if you’re clueless, but don’t bother with new items added on subsequent guesses; they won’t be right. The correct item will be in the first list you get.
There are some peaks where getting the right item and reaching the peak in the same playthrough is either impossible or incredibly annoying. Don’t stress if you don’t have it; keep picking everything up and try again with your bigger inventory the next time you pass by.
Climbing Tips
Before tackling a big cliff, make sure to rest fully. Sit down and rest to recover your maximum health, and also check that Moira’s not out of breath. If she’s tired, let her stand still until she rests her hands on her knees and stands up straight again.
While climbing, mash the jump button! Unlike most games where this might cost more stamina, here it’s a useful shortcut. Jumping while climbing can get you higher than just steadily climbing.
If you find yourself unable to reach the top of the cliff even with jumping, there might be a different route. يستخدم “look around” و “look further” to zoom out and check the area. في “look further” mode, climbable surfaces are yellow, and unclimbable slippery slopes are red. You might spot stepping stones or another hill to jump to halfway.
If your health is super low, it may limit some climbs, but generally, you can make it to the top of a cliff with low health as long as you’re rested. If unsure, leap to your death to get a do-over with better health. (عادة! أحيانا, you might be surprised-teleported to an NPC encounter somewhere else, which is helpful if you got stuck accidentally but can be confusing.)
Hassle the Goshawks
If you see a goshawk, go bother it! Climb up to its perch, walk up to it, throw a stone at it—just reach it somehow. Your effort will be rewarded with some tasty plot exposition.
Game Crashing
In-game crashing and freezing issues undoubtedly are a big no for most gamers. لحسن الحظ, there’s a way on how to fix it. You can refer to our A Highland Song troubleshooting guide.
